Retired IIHS-HLDI chief survives severe crash - G30

Great video. Adrian Lund survives a severe crash in what looks to me like a G30. Worth a watch!

The IIHS is responsible for driving a lot of the changes we see in modern car safety systems. Even though this is a generation newer than my F10, I'm still secure driving a very well engineered car.

Wow. If I followed that correctly he basically got into a head on collision with a net speed of 120 mph or so.

It’s worth noting there is no mention of the other car involved in the accident…

Absolutely amazing to see the crash safety of these cars.

I'm very glad he was able to survive this level of a crash.

And, yes. He was driving a MY2020 540xi (G30).

At 1:41 the VIN is clearly visible.

Also an M Sport--a couple of "M" logos visible on the broken wheel and sill plate. Also interesting, they showed a couple of BMW 5 series cars in testing. Overall, I would call it high praise for the safety of our cars. --Bob

Interesting to note the other car was a 2016 BMW 228i. That driver did not survive as she was not wearing a seatbelt.

And was ejected.

Cars are so much safer today! I remember when padded dashes were the latest safety feature. A very welcome feature from the perspective of a 10ish year old who smacked his forehead on the dash when his dad didn't stop in time on a rain slicked road, rear-ending another car. That really hurt! No, I was not wearing a seatbelt. I'm pretty sure there weren't any in the middle of the front seat anyway.

That was an intense crash so it is hard to say how her 2-Series would have stacked up against the 5-Series, but not matter how you look at it skipping your seatbelt is a guaranteed death.

I never understand how people skip them still. The cars are made and tested to such high standards and then to throw it all away? Nuts.

The driver of the 2-Series puled off on the shoulder and did a u-turn before proceeding back the wrong way 50-ish MPH into oncoming traffic - without her seatbelt on. She survived the accident but died the following day in hospital due to her injuries.

contrary to popular belief, head on crash with both vehicles travelling at 60mph is the same as driving into a wall or a tree at 60mph

crash testing i believe are done driving into the wall at something like 40 mph?

Only if it’s two identical cars meeting perfectly at the same angle.

Look up Smart Car vs Mercedes, or Yarris vs Camry IIHS videos to see what a change in mass does.

Here you go, C Class vs Smart ForTwo. I don’t think the windshield even breaks on the Merc:

I hope behind the scenes, that bmw are doing more than just what euroncap / IIHS or similar are testing on.
To give an example, the f10 when originally tested got top marks. It was later tested for the small offset crash ie where the object hitting the car missed the chassis bars and the wheel tends to want to intrude into the cabin. This is what happened and it got a marginal rating on this
So why were bmw not testing the scenario?
Volvo did
That was out right on the g30 but it’s an example where they didn’t do enough

I hope that they go beyond what these tests highlight.

Do they test at higher speeds where the forces increase dramatically

And offset crash at 40 mph is tough but imagine on a country road in the U.K. where cars travel at 60 mph . And offset crash there would invoke a huge amount of force to disperse

If you look at the g60 forum you’ll already see a crashed g60 there which looks like it was involved in such a crash.
There was some intrusion there.

Nearly every car company suffered in the small offset crash tests when they were first introduced. I wouldn’t put it past a safety-focused company like Volvo to design for a test that doesn’t exist, then lobby for the test to become standard.

Two things to mention:
1. Kinetic energy increases as the square of velocity. IDK how in this world it can be asserted that two objects colliding "are the same as driving into a wall or tree" since the wall or tree has zero kinetic energy.
2. The IIHS is funded by the insurance industry - that's the first "I" in the acronym. Their intents are what you may make of them.
