What motivates you to tune your 5 series
Hey,
I was just wondering that what motivates you to tune your 5 series cars, when the powerful versions (like 540i xdrive or the M550i xdrive) are already so fast? Don't get me wrong I do not want to judge, but it would be just interesting to know what drives you to adding more power to the cars which are already with acceleration times under 5 seconds? Is it just the need to be faster then the "guy with the factory car" or something else? I personally have thought about tuning the 540i Xdrive, but really do not feel the need, because the car is very well engineered and plenty fast. Most of the time you only use a small part of the engines power, so I do not feel the need for more. I understand that in a "street race" I would lose to some cars, but I can live with that |

For me, it's taking more full advantage of the engines capability. BMW leaves a ton of room for more tweaking in the stock engines and having it closer to its potential is satisfying. Do I race? No. Do I track? No. Do I use that extra power at times to merge, listen to the engine on empty roads and get to the speed limit quickly - yup.

It also depends what you are used to, coming from a mapped 330d I felt like the 540i was lacking in torque, especially mid range. It had decent pull at low revs, but didn't really build on that until 5000rpm. A simple stage 1 tune fixes that, the car feels more effortless now, not having to drop as many ratios to make decent progress. Stock it felt strangled in the mid range, a bit lethargic. |

Honestly for Americans, I think it is genetically encoded. I suggest you Google and watch the show Home Improvement for a better understanding.

For me honestly, it's because I can and knowing it's available and will add 50hp just makes me smile knowing it's there. It's also having a car that's slightly different than others.
I don't even drive fast! I choose to have the car start in comfort mode and use comfort mode 90% of the time. But when I want to get a rush and just blow by someone, Sport Plus is that rush and hell another 50hp will make me smile even more. All this said, Dinan tune is what I went with and the only option for me. It's plug and play, BMW authorized from a warranty perspective and I don't have to take it out every time I go to the dealer to hide it from them.

This warranty does not include reimbursement for repairs to any original vehicle manufacturer's component(s) that may have been affected by a Dinan component." I was thinking about going with Dinan, but was scared off when I read that. Am I missing something here? Has anyone had a warranty claim after installing a Dinan tune? |

That quote include is for cars OUT of manufacturers warranty. The warranty for in service cars is covered by Dinan if BMW does not.

With a conservative tune, such as Dinan, you really aren't sacrificing reliability. In terms of significant improvements, that is subjective, but I would agree, the cost vs. the improvement is probably not necessary. That said, I am doing it because, as I said, I can, it's available, I am compulsive and I am curious. Do I expect it to blow me away? Maybe, maybe not, but I think the only way I would be disappointed would be if I did not feel any improvement at all. Even the slightest improvement and I'll be happy as a pig in shit.

My view is these cars have a lot of headroom and you eat into that with tuning. But 99% of the time you aren't using the extra power so the impact is small.
I had a 135i for 12 years and tuned for 9 of those. Stock boost was 8psi. Tuned was up to 20psi in ideal conditions. That lifted wheel power by over 50% and over 100,000kms there was not a single issue related to tuning. The M550i want probably give up that much power increase but assuming you can manage the torque and not bend rods I'd bet it can run tuned for a long long time. |

To add a little more spirit and emotion to a solid, reliable German muscle sedan.
To get that mix from a British car needs twice the cash. To get that mix from an Italian car needs twice the repair shop visits. |

Because Autobahn ;-)
Very unuseful post but I did enjoy last week to beat a new M5c at the German highway. While it's not a competion car wise, cooling, brakes, suspension setup, the HP and lack of speedlimiter gave us a good hour of joy. Findings for the logbook: - Our brake(pads) are quite useless, will switch to EBC yellow or something - The car is amazing at the highway, I drove 4-5 hours at speed at you just step out like nothing happened. - The dashboard stops at 263 (255 corrected) the RPM clock ofcourse goes on. - I had a chance at an empty straight to get to 311km/h on a pretty accurate GPS - The tunnel in the middle of the car becomes very hot after 4 hours at speed, I first thought I turned the heather on by accident ;-) - The car is super stable up to 280, afterwards it's gets fast more noisy and a bit more work It's a complete different car compared to my 3 series, suspension/brakes but also the way power is delivered, after I tuned it I can only state that the BM3 stage 1 provided a very well fit powerbumb to the car, curve is much more there, still decent when needed, but also able to outrun 99,9% of the cars on the highway. A funny notice, the gears seems to be much "longer" due to the crazy amount of torque from 1200rpm till 7000rpm. It's stays a great highway cruiser and tuned it's an extreme fast car... but those brakes...almost criminal ;-) end of useless update..;-)

what he said lol.. seriously though I had my 540 for 7 months said I didn't need to waste $595 for a tune since the car drove beautifully already. However, maybe out of boredom I went and got stage 1 and it is like a new car. it's definitely a smoother acceleration that just keeps pulling....With the tunebI believe hp is a little over 400 and to me it's alot. I could not imagine having a 500hp car or faster....Perhaps if I had a m3 or m5 I would seriously drive in comfort mode most times...Currently I drive in sport + most times
