The left front 20 in rim on my 2021 540i M Sport was slightly bent or out of round causing a vibration and the BMW dealership had the equipment onsite to repair. The wheel is heated and brought to specs from the inside. No cosmetic damage that needed repairing. The cost was about $150 if I recall. Not that bad. The repair worked perfectly. These rims get bent very easily especially with the low profile run flats. For the dealer to have the equipment and staff to repair rims, that is a sure indicator that it is a common occurrence.

With the trend being larger and larger wheels (and lower tire profiles), it's obvious why BMW dealers offer wheel and tire insurance. If the fad should swing towards 17 and 18-inch rims, I suspect BMW would really miss the income.
One repair shop that I use said that the combination of low-profile run flats and larger wheels really increased the probability of bent wheels even in a warmer place (like Texas) that doesn't experiance winter's pot holes. Run flats have rigid side walls (to support the car in the event of a flat), so the energy of striking something in the road seems to transfer to the alloy wheels. I suppose that's why police vehicles are equipped with steel wheels. |
