common problems or issues with 2020 M550i XDrive

As the title says I was wondering if there were any known common problems or issues with the 2020 M550i XDrive as I just purchased one with 14K miles and a year of factory warranty left. This is my first BMW by the way although I am a old-timer gearhead.
Thank you

There is a thread with common issues for all G30 models that might be helpful. I have some other info on improvements made for the 2020 model year. Although it didn’t get the updated body styling and Driver Assist updates that the 2021+ got, it did get the updated engine and a few other things.

FYI - the 2021+ model is what’s referred to as the LCI. Basically a mini update done halfway through the model lifecycle.

I’ll see if I can find what I have. The forum was very helpful.

I just bought a 2020 also, with 25k miles on it.

He sent me an extensive list of updates. When I’m on a desktop, I’ll try and copy to paste here or send to you directly. Having trouble with it on the phone.

Two issues that have come up on the 540 and 550 are coolant leaks and the active grill shutter getting stuck. I think the active grill shutter may be covered even after the warranty ends. I can’t remember if the coolant leaks were addressed with the engine update or not. Outside of those, not much comes to mind. But others can weigh in with anything I’m forgetting or overlooking.

The link that NGT2 shared covers pretty much what's known about the N63 at this point. The other info I shared was a comprehensive list of updates to the TU3 version over the TU2 version, expanding on what is in that link, but not a list of known issues per se as nothing has popped up with the TU3 yet (touch wood!).

Re: active grill shutters, it seems to be a wider issue with the design since our brand new X3 developed the issue within a year.

So, in summary OP, join the ride with us and let's keep each other updated if any issues show up as we rack on the miles! Enjoy your M550i and happy motoring!

I got a juicy issue to keep an eye for...

This comes from a 2020 that I did a M5 conversion on, including suspension & M5C motor mounts. This was 13k mile example...

While installing the motor mounts, I had to remove the rack & pinion, and once I did, I discovered an oil leak forming at the front left corner of the upper oil pan, I had cleaned it up to monitor how progressive it was, and it pretty much had covered the same amount when the car was in for an oil change at 17.5K

Intersting-something to keep an eye on when changing the oil for sure. On a side note what did the conversion accomplish for you and if you don't mind cost?

Tough question(s) to answer… you mean from the motor mounts? Or the whole project? Lol
