Warranty Expiring -- Options?

The warranty on my 2019 530e will be expiring in October. It will time out due to the 48 months, not mileage. The car has about 23,000 miles on the clock.

I'm guessing maybe 5,000 miles max on the internal combustion engine, due to my ability to charge at work and limited use of the ICE.

What are my options as far as extending the warranty with BMW? Not sure I'm interested in a third party warranty as I don't want to guess as to what is/is not covered.

My understanding is that you do not want to own a BMW out of warranty, but I like the car and would like to keep it a while longer.

I have not had any major issues, but there have been things fixed under warranty. Guessing those would have been some pretty hefty bills had the car not been under warranty.

Have you asked the dealer how much the warranty would be ?
I suspect it probably won’t be cheap though

You could not renew and self insure so to speak
You know how it’s been treated so if treated well , hopefully nothing too expensive will crop up.
If you go that route see if you can get a checkout of the car prior to it expiring, I know in the U.K. my dealership offers it. It’s a win win for you and the dealership but a loss for bmw potentially if they find something. At least you’d know there nothing bad just on the horizon

My biggest concern with these cars out of warranty is actually the tech in here which would be expensive to fix. Anything like sensors, cameras, head unit and even headlights are not cheap. This is why I assume cars get written off so easily these days due to cost of these sorts of things

Ya it will be pricey to extend the warranty. But could be worth in the future if you plan on keeping for a while.

My 2019 530e’s check engine light, due to faults stored pertaining to ihka missing messages, keeps coming on. Im still waiting for corporate to reconsider a re-purchase of my vehicle, which the dealer submitted, since I have had it for only 10 months. But I believe that due to the fact that it was out of manufacture warranty, they keep denying it. I do have certified preowned warranty still so I'm hopeful but I’m not sure how much longer I have to keep playing these games with them because I keep going in circles.

PS: my car is 32k miles.

I'm in the same boat as you. 2019 M550i with 26,000 miles. Warranty expires end of April. Plan on keeping it for a while.

I kept my 2011 535i for 5 years after the warranty ran out without incurring any major expenses. I am considering getting an extended warranty for the 550 though. Not sure from where yet.

There is a long running thread on issues for the G30 across various trims, but the 530e doesn't show up a ton. That said, you can extend the warranty through BMW since yours hasn't expired. I'd reach out to Christine @ Steve Thomas BMW and see what they can extend it for. She was very easy to deal with and offered a great price on mine compared to locally.

I can check my paperwork, but I believe I paid ~$4K for 7Y/100K miles of Platinum coverage to give you some idea of the potential range.

With your low mileage you could self insure, but if you do IMHO make sure you're very honest about it. Meaning, if you hit an out of pocket on repairs that are par or higher than what an extended warranty would have cost you within the period it would have been covering you. Sell the car and move on. You don't want to be rolling from fix to fix on your dime. That's where you can get bled out.

If you can't do that. Then get an EW as a stop loss.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'll reach out to Christine and weigh that option. Leaning towards self insuring as suggested above. A $5-10K repair bill won't wreck me, but would not be fun. The car has been babied from day one, and paid off for a couple years now, so plenty of funds in the 'automobile budget', so to speak, going forward.

I went through this evaluation before my 2019 540xi M Sport went off warranty last November. For seven years of my "early" retirement I sold BMWs and MINIs at a local dealership so I am familiar with the various options (although I am now seven years removed from that experience, I still stay in close touch with folks there). I had previously owned a 2010 535xi M Sport that I first leased, then bought out of the lease and had CPO'd (we could do that back then) and eventually kept for nine years. In late 2018 I sold it locally with 45,000 miles and it still showed 15,000 miles on the original brakes. I still see it around and the new owner has not had any major problems with it. When I owned it I never had a major problem with it out of warranty. With Covid and the usual old age issues I have not been driving my 540 too much--only have about 17,000 miles on it. I decided that I will keep this car a long time unless it blows up on me. Based on my experience with the 2010 535 and a good experience with my wife's 2014 328xi, I decided to self insure rather than get an extended warranty. Throw caution to the wind and hope for the best. --Bob

I bought EWs for my Audi and Volvo and I got 0 money back. Wasted about 7K total. These two cars didn’t have any issue after 4/50K new car warranty expires, all the issues they ever had happend before 45K miles.
As a result, I don’t buy EWs anymore, the house always wins.

In terms of your comment on guessing what it covered and what is not, frankly there is more guessing with BMW's warranty options than third party exclusionary warranties. Exclusionary is the key word because they basically tell you what is not covered and everything else is. I went with Route 66 after my CPO expired, however, I don't think they write PHEV G30 contracts.

You can't go into EW's trying to win or hoping for issues. The house does always win, on average. What you are buying is peace of mind in case you are the outlier from average.

If not interested in a 3rd party warranty, you may want to check out my thread on the BMW Platinum extended service contract. This will give you a rough idea of cost based on what others paid as well as what is covered by the contract:

Definitely don't want own a BMW out of warranty. Especially if you can purchase a warranty below retail price. I purchased mine from Ben from BMW. **************. He's a Finance Manager in California. He was able to offer BMW warranties as well as 3rd party warranties. I went with the 3rd party because he was able to beat all the quotes I've seen on here and it's longer coverage than the BMW branded warranty.

Not sure about the whole don't own a BMW outside of warranty as a general statement. For example, my F30 328i went to 110k miles before the turbo wastegate failed and had to be replaced for about $2k. That was the only repair that came up until I sold it at 131k miles and 10 yrs old. It was rock solid and an EW would have been wasted money. That said, on the M550i, I definitely plan to get a Route66 EW and still hang on to it for many years. By the time the EW ends, I will know whether I have a reliable car or not.

TLDR; think about your engine and your car's historical performance and ask yourself if you really need an EW or not. Remember, an EW is for peace of mind for *major* repairs. I'd be delighted if my car didn't develop any serious issues despite paying for an EW, and I will rest assured that IF something were to go wrong I am covered.

I used to make that blanket statement too about "never drive a BMW out of warranty". For me it meant trading it in when the factory or CPO warranty was up. I did end up buying Route 66 on mine when CPO was up this past January, but I gave it some hard thought.
