The LCI's sound a little bit more throaty (different resonators), but no Maserati like pops.

Sport+, gear select to the left, manual mode activated will result in absolutely no computer controlled upshift. If you take it to redline and don't shift you will trigger the fuel cut off to save the engine (thankfully).

Also, if you drive on the freeway or something in ECO mode you can manually get the car into coasting by holding the right paddle after you've gotten to 8th.

The one M550i I test drove for a short period of time wasn't as loud in the sound department. However, the M850 convertible I drove during one of the BMW events did sound a bit louder than the M550i...
The M550i does this without even shifting in Sports Plus mode...at least the 2022's do. If you take your foot off the gas in Sports Plus with anything over 2000rpm it gets throaty. At higher RPM levels it will definitely pop and bang. m850i and m550i have same engine, guys at dealership said they sound the same but I can't confirm or deny that in person. After engine warm, the m550i sounds just plain nasty slamming the accelerator in park in Sports Plus. So many pops and bangs.

good to know!!! yea someone mentioned something has changed from the 2021 to 2022. I was only able to test drive a used one as no dealers had a new one in stock - so I do know it wasnt a 2022 for sure.

same here. this car i got is the first ever with an automatic transmission. but it's so good i don't bother touching the paddles.

to be completely honest, i find no reason to have all these electronics in place. for example the paddles, the shifter, the electronic dampers and comfort options, digital screen and cluster etc...

i would opt out for a better suspension and bigger brakes instead

I don't believe that one can shift any better than BMW's 8-spd ZF transmissions. But I do like the idea of shifting, so I bought a Porsche Boxster with a 6-spd manual (vice a 7-spd PDK). However in that case, shifting is a necessary part of the driving experience not an affectation.

Used them a couple of times when going downhill, but it is not very .... practical. It is more convenient to use the ACC because it downshifts and brakes better and faster than you.

Regarding faster shifting, no. You can't change better/more efficient than the car itself on sport.

So yes, the paddle shifters of the steering wheel are a gimmick

Do you normally drive with the windows closed?

In Ohio, in February...

Yes.

I've only logged about 400 miles on it in two months due to snow.

I use them every day I drive. I use them on off/on ramps, curves, slowing down a few mph when coming up on another car on the highway at 60-90+. I thene slapshift the shifter right back to left to get quickly back to D. I always drive in Sport Individual.
Great control and save your brake wear. Transimission under warranty/ brakes are not.

i vaguely recall on the older M5's, pulling and holding both paddles would reset the driving style / response?

does my memory sound about right? and does that still work?

To return to auto mode, simply pull and hold the up-shift (right) paddle for a couple of seconds and the car will return to auto mode.

Obviously if the car isn't in sport gearbox mode, it'll return automatically to drive mode by itself.

Thank you - I suppose I'm mis-remembering it from all these years.
I thought it was something like resetting the throttle response profile something...
