Texas M550

Hi folks

I’ve just moved to Austin and had an epic 2000 mile / 30 hour journey to get here from Boston. I’m getting insurance quotes and it seems State Farm doesn’t cover OEM parts in the event of an accident. What are the implications for my lease on my 2022 M550? Do I care? It’s BMWs problem as long as I return the car in good working order right if repaired by State Farm?

Also apparently Texas doesn’t include $0 deductible windscreen coverage. Quirks of the state!

Thanks!

I use Geico and no issues with OEM parts. I can't imagine there are a lot of non-OEM parts out there for G30's...

I have had to replace two windshields on my last 540i and they were expensive. One was covered by a landscaping company that had debris hit my car, the other I paid for out of pocket.

I have State Farm and my G30 was recently rear ended at a stop light. The damage wasn't too extensive, around $3,500. I took it to a BMW authorized body shop and was happy to see that most of the replacement parts were OEM. Maybe it was because it was an authorized shop? Not sure.

Amica is in partnership with the BMW car club of America. Guarantee factory parts. Rates were competitive and I ended up going with them over all the others. Great customer service as well according to consumer reports.

Fellow Bostonian here. Our 100% glass coverage is great, but not the norm over 50 states.

In terms of insurance, I would not worry about the OEM language, most policies say this and if they can't get aftermarket, they go OEM. There aren't any aftermarket body parts for a 2022 G30.

I believe Liberty Mutual will use OEM parts on BMW here.

I have lived in Massachusetts and now in Arizona and those are two of the places in the US with the worst drivers. I would never do that trip. When I moved, I shipped my cars.

Thanks for tips folks, Amica were affordable and have $0 glass (albeit at $340 a year for just that endorsement) but were still overall cheaper than Progressuve and Geico etc.

Well I finally registered my car in the lone star state and a pleasant surprise… I had to pay only a $90 “new resident tax” and the MA sales tax on my lease was removed by BMW.

Of course the next time I lease I’ll get dinged with a 6.5% sales tax on the full value of the car, but I’ll deal with that later!

Interesting. So if you buy a new car in a state like MA and pay the 6.5% sales tax, do you get a refund if you move to another state like TX? Presumably, BMW is getting an abatement on the MA sales tax they paid or they wouldn't be taking it off your lease payment.

Yeah, TX is jacked up for leasing. Lots of dealers have "lease money" in normal times where they'll cover taxes over and above what you'd pay in the lease if TX were normal (it's not).

In MA (and most states) on a lease the tax is only on the repayment... e.g. $1000 + 6.5% of $1000

So you just stop paying that when you move to Texas as a new resident after paying a $90 flat fee.

On commencing a new lease in Texas however, you do pay 6.25% upfront on total value of vehicle, which is annoying but no sales tax on each payment nor is there MA excise tax or other property taxes different states might charge. So over a 3yr lease, including MA excise tax, there isn't really a difference - it's a wash. I'll take the no state income tax in TX!

I think the key is you didn't need to pay TX upfront tax or whatever the balance is, when you registered your vehicle which was leased from other state with different tax scheme. That looks good.

I wonder if BMW cares about OEM parts when returning lease. Would they check?

I asked BMW FS and all they said was “we recommend repairs be made at an authorized BMW Repair Center.” and noted the required minimums on the policy

As usual BMW FS aren’t exactly helpful.

Comes with complimentary poisonous scorpions and those lovely fire ants.

Also, not that MA is cheap, but property taxes in TX are phenomenal. It's all a balance I think. NV has no income tax, cheap property taxes, but 2% of the value of your car is your ANNUAL registration fee.

I completely agree. It's a shell game and every state needs revenue and has different ways of accumulating it. MA is big on the sin taxes which is fine with me because they are voluntary and don't apply to me, but they prey on alcoholics, smokers and scratch ticket junkies.

Same here in WA State...but throw in gasoline taxes, as this state is super "green" so any fossil fuel is evil. We are at 50 cents per gallon tax now. But with cars more fuel efficient, they want to start additionally taxing us by the mile...we are fighting it...but its coming down the line eventually.

We have a gas tax here too but it has nothing to do with being green. It's been in place for probably over 40 years. I would have no problem with it if it actually went towards replacing town and city roads.

Oh yeah the state of the roads in MA good lord. I love the state but when you cross the border into NH it’s like they are trying to make a point of how good their roads are!

Don't get me started. My daughter is at UNH and it amazes me that a state with arguably worse whether than MA in terms of snow and plowing can have such nice roads both on and off the highway.

I love taking the M550 up there.
