What's Your Experience with Aftermarket Warranty Claims?

Sorry, another extended warranty thread. I am considering an aftermarket extended warranty through Route 66. If I have this right, it's exclusionary, which means it only lists what is not covered. It pretty much covers everything including Infotainment, NAV, etc.

I called my trusted independent shop for their experiences with aftermarket warranty claims and I got an earful. They claim they will only pay for alternative or aftermarket parts if available and they always send out a claims adjuster to approve the work. He said it could take days and they never give a loaner to customers using these warrantees because a two day repair ends up being a week.

I was surprised at the earful I got. I thought that most folks have had repairs fully covered with OEM parts and they even pay dealer prices.

Thoughts from those with aftermarket warranties and claims experiences.

For reference, it is $3,000 for 84 months or 120,000 miles. BMW extended CPO is $4,000 for two more years. Maybe to good to be true? My CPO is up 1/2/2023.

My experience is that up to 120,000 miles, I can't think of any problem that would have fallen under an extended aftermarket warranty. I've saved a lot by not buying them, but I also don't buy problematic cars s/a BMW V8's, am very mechanically inclined, and a perfectionist in maintaining and treating my fine machinery. Along with my Italian cook, my private mechanic is treated like family.

Would only recommend a wheel/tire warranty if available.

Thanks for your insight on V8's and wrenching, but this has nothing to do with the actual question or the topic of the thread.

Thoughts from those with aftermarket warranties and claims experiences.

I had route 66 before with my e70 X5 and only had great experiences. All work done at a dealer and even got some stuff fixed that the dealer pushed for (control arms). Have to pay for fluids, tax etc...so no surprises. Easily had over $3k (retail pricing of course) fixed. But had the convenience and peace of mind from dealer.

My CPO is ending in Oct and will be purchasing Route 66 for my 530e at that time.

I disagree. My experience with aftermarket warranties is that I had no potential claims in multiple cars up to 120,000 miles.

When I reached out to Route 66 when I was considering them over the BMW ESC they noted to me that the 530e is an excluded model due to the electric drivetrain. That may have changed, but giving you a heads up just in case.

I respect that you’ve had zero claims, but I find it hard to draw inferences from individual experiences in this manner. A thread asking about how many people have had out of warranty repairs? This opinion would be helpful data to add to the pile. But Joe is asking for experiences using the warranty from a claims perspective.

To expand on why I find it hard to draw inferences from individual experiences. We all have varying tolerances and skill levels. Some people are willing to put up with minor issues that will crop up with age and some people (like me) will try to fix everything that breaks no matter how small. Where you end up on this scale can greatly tip how often you might make a warranty claim. Some people will wrench the car themselves and repair stuff they see along the way for very little. Some will have to rely on outside labor which will increase their cost. This will also greatly tip where you end up on this scale.

My usual advice to people who don’t like extended warranties on things like cars is pretty straightforward and IMHO solid in normal times. If you price out the manufacturer’s extended warranty you can set that as your OOW repair ceiling. Once you get near that trade or sell the car and move on before the OOW costs sink you. In today’s market that’s dodgy advice. You have inflation up like crazy which will push up repair costs. You have car shortages limiting availability and pushing up the price of swapping out to a new car. An extended warranty isn’t a bad “backstop”.

But our individual experiences will vary. No “wrong” answers. Just answers that differ and the “best” one for any one of us will be as varied as we all are.

Well said.

Here is my perspective on the purchase and price of an extended warranty, be it BMW or Third Party. I hope I never have to use it, but if I do, I want it to be there for me without any hassle. If it cost $3,000, I am not hoping for $3,001 in claims.

I have the same dilemma. My CPO is done on the same date as Joe. I have a 540 mind you but I also do not wrench. I will start a search soon but not really sure if I will pull the trigger or not.

I have a 540 also, but my one year paid CPO doesn't start until October (I think). Will be interested in what you guys find and ultimately decide to do.

Just sharing, I reached out to my dealer Service Advisor and this is her input on aftermarket extended warranties. She has been my SA for 20 years and I don't think her comments are conflicted in terms of trying to push me to buy two more years of CPO ($4,000)

I am not familiar with Route 66

I find the after market ones usually don't pay for enough, for example

Hardware, related failed items, full labor amount, full diagnostic Some send in after market parts if cheaper, usually takes about an hour to call in a claim If over a certain amount they send out an adjustor to inspect

Ha ha, a dealer with an incentive to sell their own CPO extension is the last place I'd ask what they think of a certain company.

I am surprised they haven't heard of Route 66. It's what Penfed and other big Credit Unions sell. That means they've never had a car that was financed and warrantied through a big credit union? I think they are just trying to get you to get the extended CPO.

I added Route 66 warranty when I purchased my car and financed through a local credit union. I was skeptical but online reviews and coverage seemed to all look great. My local BMW dealer and local indy shop both had no issues or concerns. It is a great value in my opinion but I have not used it yet, knock on wood. Time will tell. I do not see why he dealer would not give a loaner, I am willing to bet they would. They can expense it all into the claim.

Possibly, but couldn't hurt to ping her. Just gathering as much information as possible and will certainly put her feedback into perspective.

It wasn't my dealer who would not give the loaner, it was my independent performance shop. Bavarian Performance Group. They do all my paid for maintenance and when I am out of warranty, if I don't go CPO, they will get my business over the dealer. The issue with the loaner is they only have one and their experience with aftermarket warranties is that it take double the amount of time to repair a car and get the loaner back because of all the red tape. This is what they said.

Does anyone know if the prices go up with more mileage? My CPO is not up until 1/2/2023. I am wondering if the price will be the same in December with a few thousand more miles?

Joe, give these guys a call in Nashua. Cory is the owner. He was very knowledgeable on aftermarket warranties when I called this past Winter.
I cant remember the one he recommended to me, but I will be getting it before Oct 2023, when mine runs out. Customers rave about this place. Great reviews on Google with a 4.9 rating.

Pricing is a tricky one to pin down.

My BMW ESC was cheaper when I purchased it 2 years into ownership than on day 1. So it did go down with mileage. But I can’t say if that’s a rule or not. Or if inflation will alter that course as the actuaries may rebalance pricing with it in play.

I know most people only turn to Yelp to bitch, but these reviews are pretty brutal on Route 66.
