540i Exhaust tips

I got a 17 540i M sport wanted to do a muffler delete and change the tips to a M5 dual tips but didn’t know if I needed to change the rear diffuser or it would fit perfect. Any recommendations I would appreciate it!

I think you need another diffuser

Yeah, with a quad exhaust, you may not have to change the diffuser, but you will want to. It won’t look good with the stock sport diffuser, assuming you have a sport. It you don’t you have to change the bumper.

You need at least the M550i diffuser. The opening on the M Sport diffuser on the 540 won't be big enough.

Where did you get your diffuser from? Looks really good on yours might go with the one your car has

As I mentioned, there are only a few diffusers that will fit 4” quad tips. This was one of them. I’m not usually an eBay shoppers for car stuff, so I went into this thinking it’s cheap enough to be disposable if I didn’t like it or it didn’t last or the quality and fit was poor. Going on two years and I love it.

This. Quad tips won’t work with the OEM 540i MSport diffuser. I had a Remus exhaust with 102mm quad tips that required the M550i OEM diffuser (or aftermarket, but I chose OEM). Still have the Remus exhaust but went back to original 540i exhaust and diffuser.

Is there a reason why you reverted to the original exhaust?

I liked the sound but my main passenger did not. And I plan to have both car and main passenger for a while so something had to give. And since she likes my G30 better than the G60 she saw in the Walken SB commercial, I may keep the car even longer. TBH, I love my G30 so that’s not a sacrifice.

I’ve heard of drone noises from the cabin , would there be any noise if I do a muffler delete? Cars too quiet in stock can’t keep it like that

Sorry, no idea. I just swapped the OEM axle back exhaust for the aftermarket one. I’m sure there are posts by people who have done that.

I’d try a resonator delete first. I cut both resonators out of my M550 and I love it. Loud when you’re on it but otherwise pretty tame and no drone. If you cut the muffler out, I think you’ll have some drone.

The M850 has a better sound from the factory and I think it’s because it only has one resonator whereas the M550 has two.

Was it stock with the axle back or were you catless? I was going to ask about how loud this system was with the valves closed, sounds like it must be pretty loud?

Stock with axle back. Not super loud but something was different from my F30 340i with Remus axle back I had a few years prior.

Where are you on the north shore? We spend summers on Cape Ann.

I’m actually in Rhode Island now but I was in Woburn. Still in MA all the time.

What are you going to do with the exhaust now? That’s the one I wanted to try but I’m scared with a downpipe it is going to absolutely scream for a daily driver.

Drone is annoying with a muffler delete, i drove a friends one and it was noticeable extra drone, even over my sports cat with Remus axle back setup. it would drive me mad on a long journey

I am with you. In addition to the massive drone produced by a muffler delete, the car just becomes as annoying as hell. Some people can't discern between a car sounding tastefully louder and sounding like a shit riced out Honda.

Back to OEM setup and keeping it this way. It’s factory quiet but that’s fine.

Did you sell the other one already? I wish I could have heard the one on the car still I might have bought it but I really need to hear this thing in person to judge it. I can't have a screaming daily and a screaming project.

How big was the difference on the valves closed vs open with the valves closed?
