Should I wait for the facelifted 2021 5 series?
Hello everyone,
I'm buying my first BMW and when I finally decided on the 5 series I found out it's getting a facelift on 2020 which then was postponed to 2021. I have a good offer on the 2020 version (and I'm on a strict budget). Would you recommend getting the 2020 or do you believe that the 2021 version will actually be noticeably different? |

Until the final specs and ordering guide gets released no one can say for sure.
Even worse is no one knows how the virus will impact any of this. |

If you have a "good offer" on a G30 that is spec'ed out the way you like it, you should probably take it unless you can wait until late fall or winter. When the 2021 LCI models hit the sales floor good deals tend to be a little harder to find until later in the year when more favorable incentives kick in. Who knows how the virus will impact production numbers, shipping, sales incentives, etc... A bird in the hand is worth...?
With the 2021 LCI expect some cosmetic changes to headlights, tail lights, front and rear fascia, and minor dash refresh. Sometimes the bundles/packages change slightly and safety features that were optional sometimes end up as standard equipment. Base price could be a bit more as well.

I had this same dilemma back in October 2019. I custom spec'd a 2020 M550 and negotiated the price w/ the dealer. When I learned of the LCI, I cancelled the order w/ the intent of placing an order for the LCI in May/June 2020. The dealer went ahead and built the car I spec'd and called me in January 2020 when it arrived and gave me a deal that was too good to pass up (a huge amount less than the prior I negotiated in Oct 2019). While there certainly will be tweaks w/ the LCI, I absolutely love the M550 and I just couldn't pass on the car at the price I paid.

I personally would wait. I'm hoping the 540 gets the upgraded 380 + engine being used in some other models. I assume it will also get the I-Drive 7 upgrade, which I don't know whether that is good or bad. I also assume a bigger grill - which I consider bad, but it depends upon just how big it is.
When the 2021 is announced I will then be able to consider both - assuming there are 2020s in stock the way I want them. I should also point out that I"m considering other vehicles, so it's not like I'm definitely getting another 5 series.

I have a custom build 550 in "scheduled for production" status. It has been in that status for about two weeks now and considering canceling and waiting for '21 LCI as well. I'm not sure how this will play out considering we don't know when these factories will resume production.

But now, with the plant closures -- I'm thinking of cancelling and either re-ordering an LCI or possibly looking to score a great deal on a 2020 pre-LCI. My lease turn in on my '17 540 is May 11 -- and probably looking at at least June for the currently ordering car... I have my wife's F30 to drive for as long as I need to (she has a company car as well)... Thoughts? |

Same boat. Lease ends early June. No cars out there equipped how I would want them.
I wonder if there was be a shortage and how long to ramp back up? Also - if LCI does come out, incentive probably won’t be as good. No one knows though, as we have never been in a situation like this before. |

My F80 lease ended this month and provided BMWNA a production number so they extended my lease. Not sure how they'll handle the extension should it exceed more than two months they speculated production to delivery would take prior to the factory shutdown.

With the world in a pandemic recession, I am sure that BMW will move heaven and earth to keep you as you can call any dealership you want and get a car delivered to you from its lot.

My only concern is the exterior changes, including a bigger grill. While I think the car looks awesome the way it is now, I feel like once there are cars that have the bigger grill, the smaller grill ones will look old and weird after a couple of years. Just like the 7 series, hated it at the beginning and now I actually prefer it. I can't make up my mind at all. |

I extended my lease a bit over 4 months while I had a car on order. They'll extend max to 6 months from what I recall if you have a production number.
These are unprecedented circumstances so I am sure all cases would not be forced to return their cars. Wait for LCI if you can since the yet to be build vehicles are perhaps going to take way long time now to show up. If considering incentives and pricing, perhaps lock in period gets extended too beyond 60/90days if you decide to get your same ordered pending-production car.
