Unless you want the mega room and rear seat goodies of the 7, I think the 5 is plenty big enough and can be very nicely equipped. I have most everything on my M550i except for the B&W system. If you don't mind a firm ride and want to go all out, the M5 is an exceptional car at 7 prices.

Lol... that would be nice, but I really do not need that much car and my budget is 80k max. I could get a nice used M5 but want new this time. I like you thinking.

Then I'd do a loaded 540i over an M550i with few options. Unless you want the V8 power. It is addictive.

loaded 540 would be my call too, though had I have the choice would always prefer the smaller car (i.e. M340i)

I moved from M550i to M340i 3 months ago, I love the M340 , the only thing I miss from the M550 are the multicontour seats, the M340 is a great car and I enjoy driving it more than the M550.

Hey Paul - did you have a 2020 M550 ?

My younger brother is torn between a m550 and a m340 ? He drives the car stock with basic cosmetic mods he likes the laser lights remote start engine on the m340 and he loves the rocket take off on the m550 .

Whats your experience been so far ? He does not track just regular 0-60 0-100 driving on highways daily driver. Could you kindly be a bit more specific?

Thanks in advance man.

The 340 is a nice car and I really want it but I enjoyed the 5 series more. The 340 would be nice if it were not a daily and going out of town. Nothing bad about the car but I could not get over the room and amenities the 540 offered. We will see when it's time to purchase.
I want the full leather but not sure of time frame to get car. I do not want to lose incentives waiting on car to arrive.

I'd always go with M550i.

2018 M550
I like the M340 size, exhaust, suspension, (I have Non run flats) better than the M550.
The M550 had better seats (multicontour or comfort seats) , that is what I miss the most.
The M340 is like a smaller M550 and is very close in 0 to 60.

I am waiting to see the G30 LCI and maybe get a 540 Msport at the end of this year, I miss the comfort seats, I am getting older and comfort is becoming a priority over sport.

I do like the new M340 a lot, but I'd go with the M550.

I'm eagerly waiting for the new M3. That's the only 3 I'd get over a 540 or M550.

Ditto... I am waiting for the LCI also and waiting until December for the best incentives. I am selling my 7 series next month and will drive the 04 X5 I have until then. I will be very anxious by this time. As I stated before, my first choice was the M340I and I checked all the boxes on options and still wanted better seats. The 340 seats were not as comfortable and it was still missing some of the options I were giving up coming from owning 5 Seven series over the years.
I still think it's a great car but I am spoiled at this point in my life.

I've had a 335i, 435i Grand Coupe, F80 M3 and now a 2018 M550. The M340i was on my list to test drive but after driving the M550 I didn't even give it a chance.

Like many have stated you don't really get the sensation of speed until you see the speedometer. Crazy fast for the size of car and the ride is so smooth. Tons of room and creature comforts although mine didn't come with Apple CarPlay..But I've gotten over that

If you haven't already, give the m550 a spin, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

M550 all day. I compared to M340, C43 and E53. M550 blew all away for what I wanted. The seats are great, Dinan tune is just right, can't beat the V8 feel and 21mpg

To me the G30 feels more premium than any G20 M340i included.

The cabin quality and appointments of the 5er puts you a lot closer to a 7er.

The G20 interior has solid built but also suffers from lots of hard plastics where you don't see but still can touch.

The seats and road noise insulation in the G30 will always be better than the G20.

If you take a look at the inside of the doors in the G20 you can see the where they left out the extra parts of insulation found d on the same regions of the inside part of the doors in the G30.

The G20 is more nimble but not by much in comparison to the G30.

At the end of the day it comes down to personal preference and size of bank account. While the G30 is far from perfect, BMW really nailed the interior and quality of materials in this generation.

5 series is a different beast in terms of premium feel, smoothness, poise and sportiness if configured right.

Just get a custom built M550i with adaptive suspension and other goodies if you are even asking the question. Money doesn't seem to be a huge issue, you are evaluating the value you get.

M340i is a track car to me, if you are going merino leather on M340i you are likely looking at the wrong car.

AND

You cannot get multi-contour seats in a 3 series, period!

Never would I spend ~60K on a 6-pot 3 series. Just got myself a 2020 540i was debating hard getting 340i instead for sportiness. Absolutely no regrets.

I was not impressed with the seats of the 3-series! I had a 2020 330 loaner fully loaded with every option you can think of including the upgraded leather, the car had 300 kilometres, the seats where completely uncomfortable! Not sure if the M340 different seats!

I find it shocking just how rattly even the 5-Series can be. I had a rental 520d with Dakota leather... way too many cheap parts. A few weeks later I got a rental 320d with Vernasca and it felt similarly built. I would probably just wait for the M3 in your case, or I'd get something like an X5, E53 AMG or Tesla Model S Performance (in the US, a Long Range Plus model should suffice for much less money). Only if you can get a good charging point. They're all better built than the 3 or 5, with the exception of pre-2017 Teslas that have big panel gaps.

Cheap parts? Care to explain?

What rattled in the 5? What cheap parts are you referring to in the 5? What are you referring to in the 3? Have you driven an M3 and if so did it feel the same in your opinion?
