So I guess "the bold face of BMW" does not apply to the 5 series. Thank God!

I'm not one of those who reflexively rejects the newer design, but in the side by side comparison, I prefer the pre-LCI. I don't dislike the LCI, but the pre-LCI car just looks better. The back end definitely looks better in the pre-LCI.

Overall the pre-LCI just looks sharper and more prominent. Maybe it's that the LCI looks more like an elongated G20 instead of being distinguishable as a 5 series.

At this price segment, there should be no Dakota leather. Napa or similar quality should be default.

I actually think they messed up!
The design on the pre-LCI is pretty much better on every aspect.
Might just be that I'm not into the edgy design philosophy that BMW design is going through at the moment.
Can't comment elements, every thing got worse.
Hope I'm wrong cuz the 5-series is a hell of a car and looker.
Wish they had put the money on updated interior design instead.

Nah. Not everyone wants leather. I have SensaTec and as nice as Napa is, rather have this for durability and ease of
Maintenance.

In Europe, cloth seats are standard on the G30.

Which panels are you talking about?

Aside for changes made to the headlights, taillights, front bumper cover, every other piece of sheetmetal looks the same to me. Am
I missing something?

Car manufacturers cant go on changing models like this every few years. I believe there is only so much they can change and when they go above it it enters different designs which start resembling other manufacturers. My 0.02$ is that they should keep their initial core designs and values and tweak and do very very minor changes and additions.

At least they kept the signature Hofmeister Kink.

I hear...

May be in person would look better?

I have no complaints about the look of the current 5er. Pretty much this and the 7er are the last BMWs with traditional "Bloodline" design elements.

And also prefer pre-2020 cars with actual round digital gauges, not the reversed ones now fitted to new G30s in addition to ID7 lite.

My exact thoughts. I'm also not the "things were better before" guys, but I can't say the LCI looks better. Especially the rear got worse IMHO, I have no idea what BMW is doing with their tail light designs lately (looks like an asian car to me, not like a BMW rear, just an L-shaped lighting element isn't enough).

Unlike the E90 LCI back in 2009 which was a tremendous improvement over the pre-LCI 2005-2008 cars.

Looks really nice. I think the tail lights are a big improvement. They’re more defined with the classic Bmw L shape

I think that this is a cleaner, slightly more elegant design. A step forward imo.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the elimination of the cerium bits. If they're really gone, that was a hasty and a welcome retreat.

The original BMW G30 5-Series exterior was designed by Karim Habib, a Canadian of Lebanese descent.

He worked for BMW first in 1998 and was responsible for the interior design of the E60 5-Series( 2004-2009) and also worked on the exterior design of the BMW 7 Series F01 (2010-2015). Then he left to Mercedes Benz in 2009. Habib returned to BMW in 2011 as head of exterior design until January of 2017. He left for a few years to become the head of design at Infiniti and as of September 2019 he became the SVP and head of the KIA design center.

He also worked on the BMW X3, X6, current 7 Series G11/G12 and BMW 6 Series Grand Coupe.

At BMW:
