No Grip

I've got a 2016 550i (non-xdrive). Just wondering if others have the same issue as me regarding bad rear wheel grip. It spins all the time, even at half throttle. Has done it since I got it. Getting worse now since the tires are wearing. I guess that's why they made the x drive. Can someone chime in and let me know the difference between this and the new m550. Are there any issues at all with grip? Thx

Not an M550 owner, but I can only imagine that xdrive greatly reduces or entirely stops this. Maybe some initial slip, but the system should be transferring power pretty damned immediately. If you go into traction mode or DSC off, I assume you'll get more slip and lose the advantage of the car reducing throttle input on your behalf to maximize traction.

i have owned a few of the 550i models. a e60, f10, and now the g30 m550i. and i dont believe that i ever had a issue with tire splin like you mentioned. although sometimes it would be cool to taking off and smoking the tires.... Of course with the xdrive. you have a lot of control over traction.

I am wondering when you say at 1/2 throttle and you get tire spin. are you sure? does the traction icon light come on in the dash when this happens?

A lot of things can contribute to tire spin. condition of roads, tires, weather. Have you owned the car very long, and if so when you have had it in for service have you mentioned this to your service advisor.

To answer your question the m550i is awesome. even when using launch control its a Rocket. I might get just a little break of traction since putting on a pigback tuner but its minimal.

Are you in sport mode by any chance ? Reason for asking is that the throttle response is obviously more sensitive so half throttle probably equates to something like full throttle in comfort mode or there abouts.

Not got a 550i my self but assume there is a lot of torque with this engine and I guess it's just enough to overwhelm the tyres.
My previous car a f10 530d rwd could quite easily spin the rear wheels if I was heavy with the gas peddle off the mark, that had just under 400lbft or torque so imagine the 550i is similar torque wise.

As others have said drive seems to mitigate this but that's obviously not a fix for you.
Can only suggest less throttle initially until speed builds before applying more gas.

I know the reason why I smoke the tires. There's way too much torque in this car to not have AWD or at least some sort of LSD. The tires don't matter. It's done it since the beginning. It does it in any drive mode. I was just wondering if there was someone who owns/owned the same car who had the same experience, but now has the m550i (or an f10 with xdrive) and could compare the two. Without a doubt the xdrive is going to make a significant difference, just wanted to know how much.

Can't answer as per a 550 but had a 530d EWD previously and have a 540i xdrive now and yes the xdrive means I can floor the car from a standstill and there is no wheel spin so no doubt you would experience the same

I went from a 2015 M5 to a 2018 M550i. The M5 could easily break the rear tires loose in a straight line. Forget hard acceleration from a stop making a turn. The best option was switching to Michelin PS4S tires, much more grip than Pirelli tires or even the Michelin PSS but the M5 still could over power them with ease.
The M550i on the other hand is immediate complete grip in most any situation, even wet. With TC off, it may slip a tire on wet pavement but XDrive immediately reroutes power resulting in hard acceleration.

Get new tires. My 700hp boss doesnt do that, my 526hp gt350 doesnt do that, but I didnt put hard tires on them. Nice soft ones that beg you to floor it so they can give you whiplash.

It's done it since day 1. I have Michelin Pilot SS. It's a little worse lately though since tired are getting pretty worn. Are there stickier tires out there?

Reviews I have read on your tires say they ride like a brick and are slick as all get out. Just like what you explained. Those tires have a soft compound on top and underneath that is hard compound rubber. Once the soft wares off which is around 4/32 you are then on the hard compound and its like driving on ice. People say they get about 12-14k miles on them. Thats it. How many miles do you have?

As mentioned, the Michelin PS4S have superb grip. Michelin Sport Cup 2 or any other R compound are stickier on dry but less grip in the rain, potentially unsafe... So stick with the PS4S. You will notice the difference.

Had PS4S on my M4, which I recently traded for my M550i. I could still break them loose all the way through 4th gear, anytime I wanted. Just the nature of the beast, and one of the reasons I traded (those tires are expensive!). Drove M3 and M4 at Circuit of the Americas, and they are true beasts. However, when we did the drag race portion of the M track day, we used the M550i and launch control. Gotta be a reason BMW chose to do that.....no wheelspin, just an amazing launch. I believe that's why the 0-60 time is quicker for the M550i, the xdrive affords maximum traction for launching. I know I certainly have no regrets. BTW, loved the PS4S, they were the best tires I had on the M4. Planning to put them on my M550i, when the time comes.

Check your tire pressure. If your tires are over inflated they'll lose grip a lot faster. Sometimes dealers will inflate tires to the maximum PSI instead of the manufacturer recommended PSI.

I've had Michelin PSS and PS4S on several cars and they're incredibly grippy tires.

Swapped out to the PS4S. One of the PSS has a tear in the sidewall. Warranted it, so decided to replace both. Much better indeed. The PSS has 50% life left. Kind of surprised. Thanks for the recommendation guys!

Ps4s rubber was softer when theh launch them for the first time but worn to quick.

Now the rubber is diffrent. I still got old 2 ps4s from old car.

Its diffrent now. Not as good as was. Still great but diffrent to what it was and price nearly doubled to what it was...
