F10 535d vs G30 540i

Greetings everybody.

I've lurked here for about a year. Currently, I own a 1997 540/6 and a 2000 750iL (and a couple of e3's). They're very different but I still like them both. The 540 was a European Delivery in May 1997 and I ran up 10,000 miles in 25 days.

I was planning to do a Euro delivery of a G30 540i xdrive this upcoming summer but of course that's not happening. Anyway I don't personally care for the facelift styling.

Still, I'd like to pick up a newer 5 for trips out of town and "failure no option" situations like giving a ride to in-laws. Obviously I keep my cars 'til the wheels fall off so a 550 is probably not a good option for me.

Sorry to be long-winded. I was just going to pick up a G30 540. I test-drove one and it seemed really fast once it had some rev's, though my old e39 subjectively seems to have a bit more punch right off the line. Then it occurred to me that F10 535d's are out there, and pretty cheap right now. Finally, I come around to my question: Has anyone here had both cars and, if so, would you care to share any comments and observations about these particular cars? I don't really care about the electronic doo-dads, I just want the better car for actual driving. Thank you!

I moved from a 2014 F10 530d LCI (US market 535d) to a 2020 G30 540iX six months ago. The main difference is the way the two pull. The diesel has torque from 1000rpm and pulls very hard, but runs out of revs at 5000rpm. The 540i needs to be revved, but has 80bhp more so is ultimately faster. I was surprised that the 540i is not far off the diesel for mpg. My F10 was RWD and the G30 is 4WD. I could easily get the F10 torque to spin the tyres up on a wet road. The G30 just gets up and goes. Both are excellent cars, but I wanted to get back to a car with a warranty. F10s are beginning to age and if you do go with a diesel, make sure it has had the EGR recall performed.

Engines in both are great but each is quite different in character.

The diesel although actually slower feels more effortless around town due to that torque being available straight away, however what you lose with the diesel compared to petrol is refinement. Im not saying it is bad but at idle kJ could feel the engine vibrating, although this disappears as soon as you apply any gas.

The petrol in comparison is more refined and really gets going at higher revs.

I liked both engines but they are quite different in character. My main reason for moving to petrol was governed by restrictions on using a diesel here in the uk in London although that only applies to older cars rather than the current ones. However there is a "war on diesel" here in the uk so I just wanted to avoid potential future restrictions if possible

The othe bug difference between the cars was xdrive on the g30
In the uk we don't get a choice and the 540 only gets xdrive

This allows you to get the power down so much easier than rwd and gives me more confidence in those circumstances.

If you have not driven a g30 540 go for a test drive and see what you think.

Here in the uk time is running out for buying a ice car, from 2030 we will only be able to buy a ev from that point on!
