Automatic Map Update Region Change
So I just purchased a 2018 540i xdrive this past weekend. It has about 10 months left of the Connected Drive services and the previous owner had the automatic map updates set for the Illinois region. I went online to change the region to the Ohio region this past Sunday and nothing has changed at all in the car. I called BMW support and they had me logout from the BMW app on my phone, update the connected drive services in the car and reboot the idrive. No change in my region. Finally, I opened a ticket with BMW IT services but it could take up a week to hear from them. Anyone know of a simple solution to get my car to change regions so I can get the automatic map updates for Ohio?

I haven't swapped regions yet, but I imagine it would take a bit to be reflective as the car would need to download the new map update for the selected region. Updates are only downloaded while the car is running (but it doesn't tell you as it does it in the background) so it can vary based on size of the update and how long your drives are I'm sure.

I guess I'm confused. There is an option online to change regions. I have the 2017 orginal maps, but Illinois region is 2021. Why can't it change to Ohio and download 2021?

It will be an actual map update, but only for the region selected in the ConnectedDrive portal. To get a full update that covers all regions (updating the base map) you’ll need to install the update at the dealer or obtain it elsewhere. OP is asking about the regional OTA map updates.

So the vehicle started to get map update one incremental update at a time. my 20 minute drives to and from work are not long enough to trigger the download. I had to drive an hour plus round trip to trigger it. updated to 2018-1 and last night 2018-2. I wish it would just jump to the latest maps. this may take a few months to fully update.

I'm really glad that I found this post. I did the exact same thing and have yet to have my region updated. My commute times are very short, so I'll have to see what a longer drive will produce.

The only way to get the whole of a country or in my case Europe, is to get the USB or dealer update. OTA will only ever give you the region specified in connected drive.

Maybe this has been answered, but I can't find it. How does one initiate the OTA map update? I got the software for the 2022-1 maps for my 2014 535i, the map in my 2019 540 is 2018-1, which is way out of date.

After researching BMW's OTA map update (poor) strategy, I decided to update myself. Thanks to shawnsheridan for the map link and Gerry at BMW Nav codes: bmwnavcodes@gmail.com for the FSC I now have the latest maps.
