I've got this problem, BMW asked around 2k to replace the dash trim. I pulled off that dash trim and noticed the plastic tubing that the LED light runs the light on had what it looks like fogging on the plastic tube.

That plastic tube was a long strip that is removable and it has the LED diode on one end which shines the light down that tube but struggled to shine past that foggy part. The foggy part looks like someone put a cigarette lighter to the plastic and burnt it.

Surely, how can this be the fault of the owner!
If youre under warranty it is covered, i wont even mention that because theyll prolly make a case you could have tampered with it.
Just show em a newer car to compare

I'm having the same issue. I'm wondering if it's something you can fix yourself? My dash looks exactly the same as the pics. I'm not under warranty so wondering should I even fix.

In night driving mode, the ends dim though - does that sound right?

The ends shouldn't be the only sections that dim but there is a setting, if I recall correctly, that allows you to dim all of the lights at night. Nonetheless, there should uniform lighting from all LED diodes where ambient lighting is concerned.

I noticed this about two months ago in the same areas everyone mentions. I wonder if this is from consistent use of them since the LED lights can only be turned off in the settings. There should be an option to keep them off during day driving and then turn on automatically at dusk when the headlights come on.

I moved over to extended warranty now so I hope I don't have issues when I approach them with this.

Ambiance light

I had the same issue with the dim light at the corner on the Passenger side. I took it in and it was fixed under warranty. They had my car for almost a week!!! Now I get it back and the issue is when I change colors I get half and half on the top line. I just got the car back yesterday and I am calling the dealer today to get this fix right once and for all. They had one job.

Yup I have the some issue, the central upper light strip is dimmed at each end.
The others work fine and illuminate with the same intensity.

I believe the issues were there for a long time, I just never noticed.

Same here - the end LED's had burnt out and I just thought it was normal as it looked rather even.
From this site, I found out that wasn't the case - made an appointment to have it replaced by the dealer.

Your car is still under warranty ?
Mine expired in 2020 and I don't even want to think about how much it would cost.

Yes. You could check realoem.com for the part #'s and cost - it seems to be a straightforward dash removal for the light strip (re)install

Believe the invoice for when I get mine replaced was about $400 for the part then they have to program it so you don't get the mismatched lights like some people have posted.

Same thing happened to me
They said they just had to reinitialize the lights that second time. I had that half and half issue also when they fixed it the first time

Despite the issue you are having, I must start by saying our Interiors are so beautiful at night. The ambient lighting adds great... errrr... ambience to the interior.

Moving on to your issue, I brought my car in on Thursday and they got this fixed by Saturday through my extended warranty. I have the receipt showing all repairs so I will try to post it later today for the person who asked about parts. Thankfully, after it was fixed, I didn't run into the two tone color you are experiencing. Did you get the issue fixed?

I had the same issue. They changed the dash trim out under warranty. I now have a different issue with the same dash trim. It just doesn't appear to get as bright as the doors or the short trim above the light switch. Also the dash does not dim when I set dim at night. I guess I will be taking g back to dealer.

Definitely take it back. They should do some type of quality control to test it before calling the customer back. We have six or seven dealerships here and I stick with two because the others are terrible.

With the G11/G12 you can buy the door fibre optic guide separetly for 1$ at the dealer and change them your self, I did that quite a few times.

Howerver on bothe G30 and G12 dash trim light optic is sold only with the entire trim ( not sure why BMW did this. Also the door trim on the G30 doesnt come off as it is plastic weleded to the door cover.

If you are out of warranty, you can source the used trim and slowly drill the plastic welds holding the trim and replace it. Unfortunatly only way.

mrgicm is correct, the LED strip is plastic welded to the trim. The fix is easy, swap out trims and done. The part itself is what's expensive. I like the fact that you can now purchase the G11/G12 strip separately.

But yes, for those out of warranty, get the G11/G12 fiber optic piece and install yourself.

So my 2017 540i is dim in the same exact places as the original post. I only have extended warranty as well (Xtended Auto). Did you ever share your invoice? I really want to get mine fixed.

Love your interiors..was it a factory warranty or extended? I'm so scared my extended warranty will tell me they won't cover it.

My apologies. Once I got home I left for a vacation and then forgot. When I get back home this week I'll post the parts section.

I really wish there was an 'auto' section so they stay off during the day and pop on at dusk.

Brought mine back. All is well now. They said they forgot to "initialize" it.

Dealer needs to readdress all the ambient lights after replacing the dash trim (new ambient light). If you don't readdress the lights with the service function you'll run into these issues with the lights being dim and not functioning properly.
