G30 Map Updates for Sri Lanka
Hi there.
I need to get the map update for my G30 (Sri Lanka). My car was bought in UK and shipped to Sri Lanka. I can only view some European maps for the moment. At the moment company already has the update for Sri Lanka & I would like to know how I can get that and get it installed ? Can anyone help ? |

Same issue but with Korea
Hello all, this was an email I sent to BMW genius in regards to hopefully help me with my issue that I will have in May. I do not want to use a third party to install, or fix these issues as I believe BMW have the resources and capacity to fix them.
Dear BMW Genius, I have a few inquires that I would like to address, and hopefully have a positive reply/feedback. I will be purchasing a new BMW 2018 M550i through the military sales program. Some of the questions I had for the dealer were not addressed because the individual *did not* know the answer to the question whereas I have found answers from other BMW owners from other BMW forums (Bimmerpost/Bimmerfest). First question, Is it possible to change the eSIM on the *US Spec BMW* vehicles when the vehicle is in a different country? I would like to have the WiFi-Hotspot here in South Korea, which have relatively low Data plans. If this option does not work could I buy a dongle (WiFi portable device) and use it to provide the data to the vehicle? Second Question, For connected drive, what are some of the possibilities can I do when I'm driving a BMW in a foreign country? I haven't found any definitive answer on any BMW forums besides coding. Is there a solution when ever a US Spec BMW is moved to a different country on how to fix it? I did see one BMW owner from bimmerfest in regards to connected drive, that the *(BMW UK connected drive team)* contacted the BMW German team to have the account switched over to the Asia region which fixed the issue. Can this possibly be a solution? http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=982039 Lastly, possibly the most important question for me is about the *Navigation and Headup-Display.* Due to the vehicle being US Specifications I saw that navigation and HUD will not be supported here in South Korea. Now I have seen cases in Europe and Korea that manual coding can fix this issue. BMW being one of the most sophisticated, largest, and well respected automakers in the world, I would not see how this cannot be accomplished. It would be terribly disappointing since I relocate quite frequently (1-2 years at a time) worldwide that I would not be able to use this vehicle in different countries other than the United States. I hope to hear some good news in regards to these questions, as these are the only issues I have in regards to purchasing this vehicle. Thank you for reading this email and I hope to hear from the BMW Genius team shortly. This was their reply.. Thanks for contacting the BMW Genius Team. We appreciate your inquiry. The features and technology offered in a United States specification BMW are designed to operate within the United States only. Due to the network requirements for these features, we are unable to determine if certain functions will operate outside of the United States. We can only recommend speaking with an authorized BMW Center in South Korea for more information on what services are available and offered in that market. The technicians there can determine is any changes are needed for the vehicle and what feature will operate in South Korea. We regret to confirm that we are unable to suggest any third party devices or vehicle coding. BMW of North America, LLC does not recommend any 3rd party modifications or alterations to the vehicle as it may affect the warranty. Any recommended software updates for your vehicle can be installed by the service team at any authorized BMW Center. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause. Should you need, a full list of authorized BMW Centers in South Korea can be found here: https://www.bmw.co.kr. ^^^^ Which btw they told me they could not help me.. As always, BMW Genius product experts are readily available at participating authorized BMW centers to answer any questions you may have about our vehicles. For your convenience, BMW Genius Team members can also be reached via the BMW Genius Hotline at 1-844-4GENIUS (443-6487): - Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time - Friday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time - Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time Thanks again for your inquiry. I do not know what to do |

I feel you're trying to achieve something the car manufacturers aren't ready to contemplate yet. In the last few years there's been this massive movement from selling pretty much a purely mechanical product, with dedicated-purpose electronics, to one where the electronics play a far greater role than 'just' calibrating fuel delivery and brake pressure. We have subscription models for connecting to your smartphone, showing parking spaces and music services.
They have a choice to make, whether they allow the end user to customise everything, or whether they tie the options down to particular markets. From a legal perspective the latter seems pretty likely, but also from a support perspective, which is going to become increasingly difficult for them. Perhaps they'll take the views that the cars can be coded/jailbroken at the owners risk, but it's difficult to imagine that they'll even be able to turn a blind eye to this. With your example of the Nav in the HUD, South Korean authorities must have decided that shouldn't be done (why?) and it's not a feature in that region. If you code it back in, are BMW liable in any way for even allowing the coding to enable the feature? Sadly I suspect it will be a while before the manufacturers and authorities work this out. |
