There will be experts along here but I believe the best will be ESYS
Used it on my f10 previously and will allow you to do just about anything, very powerful but you need to know what you are doing as doing the wrong thing could ruin your day.

There will guides out there on the internet about how to obtain this and use it

There are other products like Carly that essentially tlsimplyfy the process by allowing you to make popular changes without having to know the underlying technical details

If you are familiar with the registry in windows , ESYS is a bit like that where you have to make one or more changes to effect a particular configuration.that's also the risk here as you make changes to thousands of settings , many of which won't be obvious what they control.

Search here and elsewhere for what you might want to change.

I have heard great things about ProTool. You need an Android device though. I have researched it and it's very powerful and intuitive.

If you are adamant about using a laptop and ethernet cable (which can be used on the Andoid with ProTool), then ESYS is your best best, but I am not sure I would describe it as "for beginners". Bimmercode is for that.

Are there any updated guides on how to install and use Esys, along with an explanation of the difference between Esys, Esys Plus, Esysx, Launcher Pro, etc.? All of the "getting started" guides I see are several years old, and the comment above reinforces my suspicion that they are all obsolete. I've been using Bimmercode and would like to move up to Esys but just don't know where to even get started with that.

Short Answer:
  • E-sys: Engineering tool used to flash and factory code module. Requires Token and Mapping Solution (ie EsysPlus, EsysX, Launcher Pro) to custom code modules
  • EsysPlus: Chinese tool that claims to have 07-2021 mapping data, but will be flagged by Antivirus tool (unless instructed to ignore)
  • EsysX: No longer available as developer passed away
  • Launcher Pro: 2018 Mapping so run the risk of coding wrong function. Original developer no longer offers; third parties sell.

Launcher Pro version

Is Launcher PRO 3.7 also using the outdated mapping? From what I can tell, version 2.8 is outdated but version 3.7 seems to be the same as E-Sysx.

Wow, that is scary. It also makes me worry about apps like Bimmercode - who knows how up-to-date those maps are.

Maybe I just have to wait until Esysx gets translated to English.

I have never used Bimmercode and I could not find any release notes stating mapping details.

EsysX was available in English, but no longer sold.

Thats terrible to hear about the developer of ESYS-X, I hadn't heard / tried to do any coding recently. I bought a hardware token ESYS-X about a year ago. If I want to do coding still with the ESYS-X that i have on-hand on my laptop, will it still work?

It would depend on when you last updated and which car you wish to code. Latest update was for 03/21 mapping.

For G-series, look into Bimmer Utility.

1. Connect to Car
2. Read FA
3. Edit FA (Add 3AG for Camera and 508 for Sensors)
4. Save FA
5. Activate FA
6. Read ECU
7. Hold Control and Select HU, ICAM4, and ACSM5
8. Select Code

Just confirming here, doing this will revert the HU, ICAM4, and ACSM5 to factory settings, correct? If so, any coding done to these ECUs will have to be redone.

Correct. Any custom coding, like removing startup legal disclaimers would have to be redone after VO coding.

Thanks. Another newbie question: Does adding a VO code itself alter the behavior of the car in any way? Or is the VO code only used by E-Sys to determine what values to write to the various ECUs when pressing the Code button? (In contrast, my understanding is that FDM coding operates independently of the VO codes.)

Modifying FA has no affect on car. It is only when used to program or VO code will it change vehicle settings.
