DRL's going yellow

I’ve seen some posts in the past about people having their daytime running lights begin to yellow has anyone been able to have the dealer warranty this since it’s possibly looked at as a wear item?

Pretty sure the factory warranty will cover it and they will install new lights. CPO will not cover it. Typical BMW poorly engineered part that they really should stand by. Kind of like the pixel issues of just about any 90's BMW.

I'm on the extended warranty so I'll need to look at the details. Didn't noticed this until they replaced one of my headlights after getting a low speed hit in a parking spot. I should have pushed them to just buff out the bit on the headlight cause now it looks bad having one white and one slightly yellow headlight.

It's not that difficult or expensive to fix if you have DIY skills. By all means try to have it done under warranty if possible, but it's not the end of the world.

My 2017 with 66k miles just turned yellow on one “eye” last week. It’s a simple fix with a ridiculous amount of work to get to the problem.

Thats what Im not looking forward to, if its like other cars its a ton of parts that come off to even remove the headlight or is it possible to replace some modules? I know for CS light mods I have seen people replace modules to make them yellow instead of white.

yellow or blue, does not matter. If it is dim it will stay dim.
You will have to replace LED module - not expensive at all and …..try to „fix” light tube if burnt - drill or grind off dark spots. May not be fix for ever. At least in my experience, been there 4 times.

You have to remove the whole front bumper and grill to access the headlight and module.

If you have a warranty you can use to get the light replaced that's the way to go. My warranty doesn't cover it. I tried the repair on mine - got the light module replaced which fixed the issue.. for only a few days, then it went back to being faded out. Now I'm just living with it because I really don't care at this point.

If it helps, mine was like that when I bought my car from the BMW dealer. It was my fault for not noticing it but I brought it up to them. To repair the yellowing, it would’ve costed me $1000. But the dealer was incredibly nice and decided to split the cost so I only ended up paying $500.

This is what I'm dealing with. The interesting thing is that I got in to an accident and got the headlight replaced, and the same thing is happening with the new light. Any idea why that would be?

Did you guys all do coding to increase brightness, or is this just an inevitable fate of those lights?

Pictures of removed headlight and LED module

I found this to be a nasty problem. One of these pictures is the bottom of the headlight removed from the vehicle. You can see the burned and disfigured bottom portion of the DRL LED "tube". The other picture is the LED module which also has some discolored portions. I used a drill to clean up the LED "tube" by hollowing it out. I also replace the LED module. After installation I was happy because it was about 90% as bright as the other daytime running lights. Only I could notice it. That lasted a few months and then went back to yellow and dim. Get this replaced under warranty if you can! The headlights are about $1500, the LED module is $200, labor if you go that route will be $500-$1000.

The problem is that even if replaced under warranty, I doubt the replacements you're getting have the root cause addressed, so it's only a matter of time before the module burns again.

This is an interesting failure. I wonder if it's thermal runaway and something that can be prevented with thermal paste or something similar.

This. Another poorly designed part that BMW should extend the warranty on. They extend it on the thermostat and active grills, but not this (or the ambient light tubes).

I’m good on both, but I fear the day when mine go because literally the only thing my warranty doesn’t cover is lighting.
