I am fairly new to BMW, and I admit that I have a lot to learn. I’m a DIY guy where possible and I like to know what I’m doing before I start if I can. Reading through some posts It looks like my G30 could have a couple different engines, at least that is how I read so far. Can anyone tell me how to determine which one I have?
Also, I know that I can use the VIN to find the build codes for my car but what I have trouble with is deciphering what the codes tell me, any guidance on that front would be much appreciated.

First question. Sorry if this sounds rather obvious but does the car have a badge on the back? That's the obvious answer
That will narrow things down considerably

If the vin decode is giving you a code such as say b58 that is a particular engine

You could google that and bmw and find out what it is
That example is a straight 6 3 litre petrol as one example

Can post what info you have in the forum here, you might not want to post the vin for security reasons though.

The only badge is the 540i, I know that it is not an M car so just basically the standard engine. I don’t know if they have more than one that they use with the 540, based upon production date or changes, that is the real question. I’ll check the VIN info,
I think it most likely is the B58.

Yeh 540 is the b58.
