Hard-drive sound

I've had this car for a few months now (actually 7, but only a couple thousand miles) and finally got around to asking this. Is it normal to hear a hard-drive type sound when getting in? Like the HD is resetting. Our F10's don't/didn't make that sound. It's not the VANOS resetting, that's a different sound.

Maybe a recording would help.

You do have a HDD for the iDrive system, but I’ve never heard it. So I assume you’re talking about a different sound.

You can hear various motors moving things into place such as the active shutters and steering wheel adjustments when you get in though.

Are you talking about the sound when you unlock it? I hear a sound when I unlock the car, but the sound I hear is the fuel pump priming the system. And like logical said, there's all sorts of stuff activating, moving etc.

Nothing is moving and the sound is definitely coming from the HU area. The sound is just like an old desktop HD accessing files. Kind of a grinding/buzzing sound.

It's not really at an unlock occasion, it's more of getting in the car after it's been sitting, like overnight. I only hear the fuel pump priming and VANOS resetting occasionally. The VANOS reset was a bit unsettling when I first heard it on the F10.

As long as it's normal I'm not concerned, just curious.

It is normal, I hear the same sound you are describing. But most definitely not the HDD since this car has SSD.

I’m sure you have an SSD, but just adding this note for others, like the OP.

The head unit has an SSD only starting with the LCI MY2021+ Prior model years are on a HDD for the head unit.

The same reason they were still installing 2G in 2012 and 3G in 2016.

I've been paying a little more attention to this noise. Could it be the seatbelts resetting for that initial tug?
