256 GB USB issues
Hi Everyone-
This weekend I bought a 256 GB USB stick to play my music off of in the car. I tested it with a couple albums and it worked perfectly, so I loaded up my entire library (around 140 GB). When I put it in now though, I'm unable to scroll through cover view, search, or navigate it in any way other that manually going to each folder (tho that works perfectly fine). Everything is just greyed out. Since I can see everything that way I assume it's not an issue with readability, is the car just taking time to process everything? Has anyone else run into this issue? Do I wait for it to resolve itself, or is there something I should do? Thanks for the help. |

I've been having a similar issue.. I've got around 170Gb of music on a 500Gb drive... I've found that once you go above 120Gb it doesn't read correctly. This is annoying as the old f10 5 series was fine with the same drive and music collection. After a lot of poking and prodding at the dealer I was informed that it will only support up to 16,000 songs per usb drive... however the idrive supports up to 40,000 songs.
I'm currently arguing with my local dealer to do a full car software update, then I was going to ask the wider community for their thoughts etc. My gut feeling is this can be sorted by coding. After explaining that I'm a consultant storage / backup engineer at one of the largest IT companies in the world they finally stopped trying the bullshit answers that are used to fob off other customers. :-P Would any of the gurus be able to comment please?

I have a 64gb usb drive and it works perfect. 99% full. I’m guessing the bmw system cannot index that much music.

I personally think that they have coded a limitation in somewhere - but it is nothing to do with the size of the USB device, it will probably be more along the lines of the database files that retain the metadata for searching having a limit. Oh and any device using FAT32 / exFAT / NTFS is fine. Mac formats it doesn't like.
