Found a M550i I want, but rusty wheel hubs?

Hi all, I need some advice. I’m looking to trade in my M340i for a low mileage (3400 miles) 2021 M550i. Price is decent and it has been CPO’d.

Checking it out, it looked fine but the wheel hubs were somewhat rusty. My daily driven M340i is driven in salt and snow and I never developed this problem.

I see that the car I’m looking at was bought in New York in September 2020. Only 3400 miles (perhaps too little?) were put in it over 2 years. And now it’s got some rust on the wheel hubs.

Is this an issue that should steer me away, or am I overreacting? Otherwise car seemed fine in my test drive.

Thanks to anyone with some feedback

If it concerns you, why not just ask for them to be replaced as a condition of sale?

Both my BMWs' wheel rotors become quite "rusty" if I don't drive them for even a few days. And it goes away after a drive with some decent braking involved. Nothing to worry about unless it is proper rust that you think has deteriorated the wheel assembly.

I like to put some anti seize lubricant on the wheel hub before putting on my wheels to prevent galling. This makes getting the wheels off easier especially after a harsh winter with all the salt on the roads. I used to have some of my wheels get stuck on the hubs before I did this. I would need a 2x4 and hammer to get them off or even lower the jack to put some weight to pop off the wheel.

I suspect that the OP is referring to the brake hubs (rotor hats) not the discs (rotors) themselves

Thought so too, but thought I'd share my experience with the rotors in case it is similar to what the OP is experiencing. Pics of the issue would help.

I’m not taking about rotors. I’m talking about wheel hubs.

Rust on rotors is a non-issue

Is that a thing most dealers would go for?

Hasn't the M550i OE brakes, the composite 'two-piece' rotors with alloy hats (hubs)?

^ I don’t know. I’m kinda hoping somebody here knows.

I’m sorry I didn’t take a pic, but just to be clear: the rust was not on the rotors themselves. After a simple test drive, rotor rust will go away. The rust was on the wheel hub.

It’s bothersome to me because my M340i, driven in winter and with over 14k miles, doesn’t have this problem.

I don't think you are talking about hubs. You can't even see the hub unless you get under the car or take the wheel and rotor off. The rotor has the flat disc that the brake pads squeeze, but it also has a "hat" - the big center part that goes over your hub. I assume you are just saying the rotor hats are rusty?

you’re spot on MATE. OP the hats should be aluminum, cheerio

Ok, I think you may have it right. The rotor “hats” are rusty, and that might be what I’m seeing.

But driving and braking did nothing to clear up that rust.

Even if this is a non-issue, I don’t like the idea of buying a $76k car (that’s what they are asking) that appears this way.

Ask them to take a steel wire brush to it then when you get it seal it.

If the above posters are correct, then your car had a brake job where the person cheaped out and got aftermarket steel rotors. My 650 has the two-piece rotors where the hats are rounded shiny aluminum. The steel rotors are riveted to the aluminum hats. If the car is supposed to have aluminum hats, then I'd be a bit upset about getting rusty steel ones as well.

They are a two piece rotor. Here are mine. 4 years old 36k miles. Aluminum can oxide, there is a lot of heat and dust. It's also possible they are not OEM rotors, I started using single piece rotors in place of 2 piece on my track car.

That pic is what I have, but mine are actually shiny. So shiny that when I have the wheels off for some reason I use aluminum polish on them. They have been on 4.5 years.

I would ask that they be investigated to find out if they're OEM parts. If it's what some speculated and someone used cheaper parts, then that's leverage for you. It's CPO and that means everything should be original BMW parts that are specified for that model. And since you're buying CPO and you're seeing something odd, I think it's fair to ask for some verification on that.

I wouldn't be a jerk about it, I'd just mention that I hadn't seen that on other vehicles and want to know all work has been done to BMW standard.

Like you said, it's incredibly low mileage. Sometimes not driving a car can cause it's own issues. Maybe it's that. But worth asking for more information.

Was it on all 4 wheels? Would think its odd for it to be replaced at 3400 miles, if not would see if there are any records. If any can be provided.

Very odd….was it a theft recovery?….flood? 3400 miles? Strange.

^ Great points, everyone. The only thing is, I have a hard time believing that somebody would replace the rotors/brakes on a 3400 mileage car!

I will definitely inquire more into this. Furthermore, as a condition of sale I will ask to have the car put on a lift so that I can inspect its underside. I by all means am FAR from an expert at this sort of stuff, but I can at least identify rust! And rust on suspension parts would be something to look for

Unless they tracked the car but that would be quite a bit of tracking to replace the rotors. Are all of them like that?
