Tire Cut

Took my 13,000 mile 2019 540xi in for an oil change today and look what they found on inspection: a rather cut right rear tire. These are the stock OEM Goodyear all season run flats. The tech showed me a razor blade they found embedded in the inner wheel housing right behind the wheel, which they presume was picked up, cut the tire and flung off. The tire was also showing a bulge near the cut. Since I used to work there and know the tech I don't doubt his assessment. Fortunately they had one in stock and I got my old employee discount on the tire. Very good luck that he caught it, as my wife an I are off on a trip to Florida Monday. --Bob

Could have been a thousand miles ago. Tires are very durable. But hit that wrong pothole and it could stress that portion just right to blow it out. Great to replace it.

I do the same with bubbles. Immediately swap in a new tire. Even though a bubble could last a mile or 5K miles. You never know. But you don’t want that failure to be at the worst time and cause a litany of problems.

I had those same Goodyear run flats on my 540i when I had it. Had to replace all four of them on an individual basis from time to time. I hated them but didn't want to replace with non OEM.

I've now purchased a new 545e with the Goodyear tyres (tubeless) have done 9k on them already and will be replacing them very soon with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. When moving on the 545e in three years will put back on the Goodyear to sell.

That’s a shame.

My Goodyear Eagle Sports have been performing really really well.

I did go with 18” due to poor roads in the NE US though so that may have been why I’m doing well. I need to get my wheels straightened soon, but the tires have held up for the last 25K miles.

did they cut open the bulge in that pic or is that the way they found it? i dont think even run flat tires last if its cut open like that more than 30 - 50 miles etc.

That's the way they found it. And as I noted, I used to work there so I know all the guys in service and trust them. Interestingly, I had the car up on my lift a couple of days before (first time the Corvette Z06 was down this year!). I checked all the tire depths but did not notice this. It may have been there for a while or I just picked it up on the way to the dealer, I just don't know. I tend to agree with your thought that with a cut like that the tire would not have lasted very long, so probably was fairly recent. I know that I should have looked more closely when it was up on the lift, but of course I didn't have the ability to rotate the wheel so if it was up on top I would have missed it anyway. Last year I did find a problem, but on my Z06. When first taking it down from its winter nap I measured tire depths (it was about ready for new tires at 20,000 miles) and all the tire depths were uniform across the tires, but I just happened to notice that the inside shoulders of the rears were completely worn through to cords (bad alignment). I expedited the new tires and was glad I noticed the problem. But both these experiences suggest a thorough inspection from time to time is worthwhile. Fortunately my BMW dealer always does this kind of inspection when the car is in for service. They now even take a short video of the walk around inspection and text it to the customers. That's where I got the picture. --Bob

I find it amazing how shit like nails, screws and I guess razor blades get picked up and get lodged so perfectly to do damage. Doesn't seem like physics supports this. Happens to at least one of my cars annually. Most of the time I plug it.

Joe, I am afraid this one was a little bit beyond plugging, but ordinarily that would be my route as well. Driving by construction sites is always a bit risky I think. --Bob

Oh I wasn't saying that was plug-able! Just that it's crazy how stuff gets lodged
