I would be very upset if this was my car. 4,000 miles on a very expensive auto shouldn't need a motor and can see how you would be very upset. Personally I lease and still would be upset as I didn't buy a pre owned one and now you are getting a recon motor with no history and some technician at a BMW dealer taking the auto apart and then reassembling it. You may get lucky and get someone who knows what they are doing taking it all apart but only time will tell. When the auto was made it was assembled in the factory with a specialist who just does that all day long. I am sure you could ask what the history on the motor was but I doubt you will find out the whole story as it might have several parts from many motors. They may be following the warranty but with that new of an auto I wouldn't expect this kind of issue and seems like maybe a bigger problem with the the few who have had the same issue . I would really push to get them to buy it back or at least get them to do a swap into a new one. However I was just reading another post that production is haulted for some engineering thing. If you are the kind of person who holds the car to it dies you will be fine with value as it won't mater. However if you sell or try to sell it in the next year or two good luck even with an extended warranty. I would question why such a new car with such low miles would need a new motor so soon. You will sell it but it will be way below value. As other have said work with BMW and see if they will help you get out of this car. I would also get an attorney to see what the lemon law is in your state as well as the Magnuson Moss federal law. Best of luck and stay firm and let us know the outcome. I would really think BMW would do something on good faith to keep you in the family.

Curious what dealership in NJ are you dealing with? If it the one on Tenafly then I have an old friend there who is a manager in new car sales I can talk to for you.
There is no reason that they shouldn't be able to place a brand new engine in your car. A refurbished engine will come up on your carfax when selling your car down the line (Work done at BMW Dealerships are very detailed on carfax reports for some reason.) Even a new faulty engine replaced with another new one will dent resale value if a buyer sees in on the carfax. Another key argument is defining their terms of "refurbished". Best case is it can just mean a new engine that was never used or installed. Worse case is it was pulled from a wrecked car with 10k+ miles and refurbished (with new moving parts) to factory specification. i understand BMW Dealership Customer Service can be messy and ignorant (not by their fault) but get the full info so you can act accordingly. I work in Litigation btw. lol Quote:

I was very excited about buying a new BMW and have been looking at them for quite a while. A friend suggested I do more research and directed me to these forums. Coming across this makes me hesitate to buy now. I would be very upset if a car I spent close to $90K on had needed an engine replaced after 4000 miles and very unhappy with the decision to replace with what is not a like-kind replacement. Thank you for sharing your experiences as I have never spent this much on a car before and am going to think this over more carefully before I decide to move forward with BMW.

Engine replacement is one thing but replacing a new faulty engine with an old refurbished one on what is still a new car is a CRIME!

My 2011 335i N55 engine is the perfect example of this. The 2009 355i N54 LCI came with many "lemon" issues during the first 2 LCI (2009/2010) production years. So much so that you have a better chance of driving past a unicorn on the road than a used 2009 or 2010 335i in 2018. Funny fact on the E60 5 series the v10 on the M5 E60 was more reliable than the v8 engines on the 545i/550i. Since the G30 550i and F90 M5 basically share the same 4.4 L V8 twin-turbo engine base (N63B44O2 versus S63B44T4) I wonder how reliability will play out in the long term between the two applications.

+1 and it is sad to see 550s are STILL having issues.
My lease on the F10 (which has been absolutely trouble free) is up next year and I will most likely go with a 540 and not worry about any of this. I would loose my #$^%& if a brand new car that I bought needs a new engine yet alone being replaced by a used one.

To be clear, "55Os STILL are having issues" appears based on ONE or TWO posts here.
Using this forum as a source for empirical data is less than ideal. It is just as possible 540 engines have similar fail rates, just not reported here. If we base it on all posts here, these cars are practically foolproof - statistically.

Reading a thread 18 months later can be entertaining. Amazing how many people kept posting what he should do after he posted that it had already been fixed. And missed the fact that it was a leased car.
bojler, good luck with yours.
