Coding Active Driving Asst?

Is it possible to code the Active Driving Assistant so that you don't need to touch the steering wheel every 8 seconds?

Why would you want to do this? It wasn't designed as a fully autonomous system and can lead to a crash if you're not paying attention to correct it if it makes a mistake...

It is already super sensitive and doesn't need a full grip.

As of yet, no one has found coding to successfully extend the hands off time, or to extend the length of the stop and go time without having to press the resume button or the pedal.

There is a device out there that mimics the touch steering wheel, which was originally designed for retrofitting the Traffic Jam Assist on the i3 and the older model X5. However, since it tricks the car into thinking you are touching the steering wheel at all times, if the system were to disengage, you would not get the audible warning to alert you to take over. As LogicalApex said above, not worth the risk to yourself or others IMO.

The only thing I've been thinking of is a way to trick the capacitive touch system under the leather.

I have changed the speed the touch sensor engages (I think original was around 12kmh something like that) I have changed it to 250kmh and no handes needed until 250kmh.

I'm very curious how Mrgicm did this. Care to share your creative solution?

And then there was silence...

Special reason why you are the only one who claims to find the coding for this and won’t share?

In looking around at the files, there are some codes related to speed and the hands-off detection in the SAS module on the car. These could most likely be modified to increase the minimum speed before it requires detection. But again, by modifying these settings, you would potentially be putting yourself at risk since the system wouldn't alert you if something was happening.

I'm going to see if I can get someone to try coding this on my 2020 M550. As a responsible adult, I don't need a warning for every little thing. It's bad enough that plaintiffs lawyers have caused stickers and warnings for everything to protect the stupid people who, for example, apparently didn't realize McDonalds hot coffee was actually hot.

I will disagree with you here... If you operated your car on a closed track I would agree that you should have absolute say, but you're likely not using your car as a pure track toy and are putting it on public roads. Pushing the system outside of the limits they designed it for adds the risk that you'll cause an accident which impacts third parties who are not deciding to shoulder that additional risk. These systems aren't perfect and are easily confused. Like the Tesla that drove its owner into a highway divider at 71MPH and killed him...

I mean the driving assistance stuff is great and works nicely already when in traffic. But it isn't a substitute for actually driving... Why do you need it to turn you fully into a passenger? A BMW is made to be driven...

I agree, and have deleted the post.

The G30 system is not as advanced as the G05 and even that is only formally supported hands free up to 40mph in very specific circumstances.

This is the reason I decided not to share the specific coding. Dont want to have someone taking the risk. Plus there is a reason why bmw coded the system that way because when coded off on higher speed it suddenly disengages without beeping because sensors "loose" the road. So it is not safe.

This is the best answer. In my world, if someone wants to injure or kill themselves, so be it. But one doesn't have the right to risk others. Well said!

mrgicm ,

Sounds really great! What ECU module did you do this to and what funktion?

I'd like to do it as well

My car regularly loses sight of the lines and the yellow steering wheel light appears. Then it gains them again. All completely not understandable to me using my eyes to see the lines.

So I think until the technology is significantly improved, it is incredibly dangerous not only to the folks in the car but to people outside the car. If you are driving, and alone, then you make the decision and take the risk; but pedestrians and drivers in other cars did not make that choice and you are imposing that risk onto them.

This thread has been dead for months. Has anyone figured out how to code this yet?

I agree and would love to be able to change to about 20 seconds before you get a warning.

On the 2021 5’s the system does an amazing job in the daytime. At night still good, but seems to get more false readings, where it will turn itself off. BMW needs to fix that and make it as good as using in the daytime.

You should by a Tesla and a pillow so you can take a nap while driving.

What a stupid, ignorant comment. Please if people don’t agree with the above then move. Why the world has so much hate with it. And by the way I love the Tesla Model S and probably will be my next car.

Having not time out for 30 seconds does not allow for a nap and what is the point of even having the system if it can not do self driving for a while longer. Obviously, people don’t take many trips or long drives don’t realize the benefit of these systems.

I routinely drive about 18,000 miles to 20k miles a year and they are great. Just asking for a little longer.

Again, anyone who disagrees, then should not be posting idiotic responses and like my Mom always said, better not say anything at all!
