Confirming CarPlay is now FREE!
So my subscription ran out last november...then in December BMW announced free carplay but the option did not appear on my idrive anywhere. Called BMW and they informed me on how to update the idrive system and it now appears again and works fine. My car is a MY2019 FWIW

interesting, I never got any email. Basically turn your bluetooth off and get in the car. Start it up. Go to Connected Drive. Press the OPTION button under the iDrive controller and choose update. Only seemed to take a few seconds. Then I think I deleted the phone from the car and re-paired it. They said it would take 24 hours but it was immediate.

Here is the e-mail that another user shared. I have not received it personally. "This is to advise you of an important change to your Apple CarPlay Compatibility option as part of BMW ConnectedDrive. BMW is extending the Apple CarPlay Compatibility option for your vehicle to remain active in your vehicle for as long as the feature is technically supported. You will no longer be required to purchase a subscription to keep CarPlay active. This extension will be at no additional cost to you, and there is no action required on your part to receive the extension. To use Apple CarPlay in your vehicle with your iPhone, be sure to choose "Apple CarPlay" as the connection mode for your mobile device in the Communication settings. Note: As part of this change, we also recommend performing an update of the ConnectedDrive services in your vehicle. This can be done by following the steps below: Depending on your vehicle's Model Year and Make, navigate to "BMW Assist", "ConnectedDrive" or "Apps" using your iDrive controller. Under BMW Assist or ConnectedDrive: Open "Options" (physical button surrounding your iDrive controller). Click on "Update BMW Assist". Under Apps: Click on "All Apps". Open "Options" (physical button surrounding your iDrive controller) Click on "Update apps and services" Once the update completes, we then recommend shutting the vehicle off and allowing a few minutes before restarting the vehicle to check the connection. Should you have any questions, please contact customercare@bmwassist.com or call BMW Assist Customer Care at 1-888-333-6118. You can check the current status of Apple CarPlay and ConnectedDrive services for your vehicle by visiting www.bmwusa.com/MyBMW/ConnectedDrive. Kind Regards, BMW ConnectedDrive" |

Mine is showing on the website that it is an option paid through 2039. This took a few weeks and Carplay never stopped working.

Have never tried Carplay, though I have an iPhone Xr. Are there benefits over just using the BMW systems, which I seem to like very much?

I just picked up a CPO 2018 M550 yesterday. I have the option get CarPlay for 240 months for $300. It’s only $0.80/m but is CarPlay really worth getting even for that?

1 - If you have an active subscription, you don't have to pay anything 2 - if you don't have an active subscription, you have to pay $80 to get the long-term The $300 option is gone/replaced, as I understand it. At $80, I would say "go for it". For $300, I would really have to think about how long I plan to keep a car and an iPhone. Log on to the ConnectedDrive web site and see what it says about your current CarPlay status. Last edited by runbuh; 01-17-2020 at 06:59 PM.. |

Might be worth asking about, or at least asking if they have all the rules documented on the web somewhere. |

CarPlay Returns (Thanks to VirtualGuitars)
I lost Apple CarPlay in 10/19 after my 2019 530EX was in service for a year. I looked at the BMW NA offers and decided I could live without it.
When BMW NA did the right thing and decided to give it back, I called up and asked how to get it. I was advised that it was going to be "rolled-out" over a period of months. Mr. Patient waited, and BMW NA kept offering it for $300. I waited, and suddenly yesterday I saw VirtualGuitars post. Mirabile Dictu! CarPlay is back, and it seems to be working fine. FWIW, WAZE navigation seems even better than it was. Thanks VG! |

I’ve been having a problem for the past few weeks with Waze via CarPlay. Waze opens in CarPlay, but the street maps don’t load... it’s just a blank beige background. I have to force close the Waze app on my phone and restart it on CarPlay to resolve the issue. It’s happened on two separate BMWs so I’m thinking it’s my phone.

I used Apple Maps the other day and was pleasantly surprised to find myself not hopelessly lost.
But I absolutely need Waze for the police notifications. |

I don't think I'll move of BMW nav until they start integrate HUD with car play...

Update on my situation where my trial expired on January 14th (last week): I called BMW assist again today and they confirmed that my subscription is active indefinitely even though it shows as an available option in the portal.
Some people are showing a 20 year extension, others are seeing it as an option even though it's already active. Since mine was a trial and never a paid subscription, it will never show the extension on the portal. Moral of the story? It's still working just fine. |

For those wanting Carplay and/or fullscreen. Just go to https://easyusbcoding.com. I paid $69 for both since my car is 2018 540 and cant obtain carplay for free(2019 and 2020). It worked perfectly! Hope this helps!
