Android auto

Happy days ahead if this is true. But looks like for Idrive 7 users only

The article suggests only future vehicles will get Android Auto support. I'm going to be really pissed off if that's true. I bought a 2020 530e with the idea that AA support was going be added in July.

I'd be pretty pissed too since their previous announcement when they announced AA was that existing cars would be updated. I expect the current crop of journalism is just sloppy.

Sounds like the July availability is meant for the 2021 cars. Our 2020 cars have idrive 7.0. I keep hearing we have idrive 7 lite. Why is called lite?

it's not "officially" called lite, but it's missing feature relative to G20 i7 (reverse assist, I know who cares about that one, but remote start hi I do care about that one)

in any case I have i6 on my 2019 and given I have two iphones all set for now...

Nowhere in that release does it say they are backporting AA support to older iDrive 7 cars. I recall reading a story that end 2020 calendar year an RSU would be available in some markets adding AA to older iDrive 7 vehicles. But I don't recall BMW issuing that statement. Nevertheless, G30 MY20 doesn't support RSU and if history (bmw history) serves correctly, even future dealer programming won't unlock it.

One never knows since they have the iD7 app store, maybe one day it will. Don't hold your breath.

It's nicknamed iDrive 7 lite because it's a bit neutered. Smaller screen, no RSU, no reverse assist, no drive recorder, etc.

BMW only did this for MY20 to combat against the newer Audi MMI system (for example). Meanwhile I don't think they gained much, but it looked good in the brochure.

Yeah time will tell what happens on that front. I'm not particularly interested in AA since I haven't owned an Android phone in almost a decade, but I'd like RSU to be added.

Even for cars with iDrive 7 and RSU BMW still has yet to actually deliver on the RSU front.

But I agree with you... Nothing is done until it is done. Buyers should make their decisions based on what is sold now and now what is rumored to come in the future.

Yes, lots of people. I have it on mine, but I haven't used it since I only have an iPhone.

hello there

I wanted to start a new thread, but apparently I'm too new to the site and can't. I will post here instead.

I just got a brand new G31.
Out from the factory, I wasn't able to use the android auto. Simply not working. Tried absolutely everything.
I thought my phones are faulty. Huawei P20pro and some other Samsung oldies I have around the house.
Apple car play - working like a charm.
So, I've ordered myself a Pixel2. Not received yet. Several sources are stating that only _specific_ android phone models are working with new BMW android auto.
I was seriously considering to switch to apple. All my family is using apple, except myself. They couldn't convince me, but bmw kind of did.

Yesterday evening, the Bluetooth stopped working. Out of the blue. Tried everything. Since car is 3weeks old, less than 2000km, I already had latest software update.
Today went to service.
They done something to it. Took 30'.
Bluetooth is functional now. yeeey...

Aaaaaand... surprise, surprise!!!
My android auto IS working!!!
I was stunned! WTF?!

I was extatic, just to later found out the downside.
I can't get online while using android auto.
Android auto requires WiFi communication with the car. Just Bluetooth - doesn't work. Cable - doesn't work. Just WiFi.
Since my car does not have a data plan, there is no Internet access on bmw's WiFi.
When I connect to the car using WiFi, I lose Internet access.
Therefore, my android auto is not just useless, but a pain: I can have access to all my apps, but my phone goes offline.

Pffff
I contacted Huawei customer support. They instructed me to activate WiFi+ and they said it should work to be connected to a WiFi without Internet and use the mobile connection in parallel.
Well, I was already trying it on the car, and it's actually _not_ working.
However
Tried same thing on my home router WiFi and actually it is working with my Huawei.
So, the bmw must block it somehow.
And it's not just the IP gateway provided by the DHCP, because obviously my home router is providing one and the huawei phone can handle it.
The bmw actively blocks my mobile connection somehow, in order to be the single mobile data provider.

Now, my company can provide me with a sim card.
However, in some countries I travel from time to time, I am using a local sim card, with a better data plan. So, using a single sim card all the time it's both restrictive and inefficient.

Finally, I wanted to share with you guys that today Android auto is a reality on BMWs, _regardless_ of the phone you're using.

Second,
I would like to ask you if you see any other workaround.
Can I use android auto, be online while not having a car data plan?

Please let me know your thoughts.

Looking forward to your replies.

Kind Regards,
hdd

You won't get AA. My G30 MY2020 (production month February 2020) does not get AA. Production month has to be July 2020 or later...

My MY2020 530e produced in March 2020 received the update. Just had to go into the dealership to do it. I have been using AA since July.

G30 MY2020 supports AA via a dealer installed update as irishpadres noted.

There are pretty extensive threads about it here on this forum.

https://g30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1735994

The dealer may push back on installing it since they can't warranty it without a problem, but there are numerous SIBs that have been shared in the thread to prod them along.
