iDrive not seeing files on USB Drive

Trying to set up my iTunes library for playback in the car on a USB drive.

I copied all the contents of my music folder (directory structure with the artist name, album, tracks) into the root directory on the USB drive.

In my 2018 540 with iDrive 6, it sees only the one song in the first folder. Our 2019 X5 with iDrive 7 sees no media.

Any ideas?

what format are the files in?
Also what file system is the USB drive formatted with? (belive it needs to be FAT, FAT32 or I also believe NTFS works)

To rule out its the format of the files, copy a mp3 or Wav as an example, you should be able to see those.
