HK bass dissaponting in a new car.

Just got my 540i m with hk sound....what would you recommend to upgrade the audio...its not bad, but definitely i xpected more...im dissapointed with the subs

I've had my G30 since May. In the beginning the sound was nowhere near where is it now. Give it a couple of months. I'm happy with my HK, but I'm coming from F30 HS. So for me it is a big improvement.

I wasn't able to try the HK before I placed my order, I'm hoping it's going to sound good and go as low as I like. The one I demo'd had the level down from the HK, and it sounded ok, so I'm expecting it to be better than that.
I upgraded the audio in my C class Mercedes because the sound system was so poor, particularly the bass, so I could install the sub and amp from that if required.
Has anyone here installed a proper sub on their G30?

At low volume, you will not get a ton of bass. The EQ does need to be properly configured and run for a few months before it sounds best.

Also interested in this - haven't even got my car yet but I have never been happy without a 10/12" subwoofer & amp in any car so I'm just thinking ahead.

If its like all previous BMW's with HK it will be fairly easy - battery in boot, factory amp in boot so all the connections required are nearby. Just a case of which wires need to be tapped.

I've had aftermarket systems in other cars before, mostly Alpine amps and JL Audio components and subs. I'm happy with the G30 factory HK woofers for now. Something like "Angel" by Massive Attack sounds clean and goes low enough, at any normal listening volume.

Definitely run the system in and play with the EQ before throwing more money at the bass. And IMHO it's the mids and tweeters that need attention before the amp or subs, unless you are a 17 year old hoping to impress your mates in a cold wet McDonalds car park on a Saturday night

Interesting, I was expecting that the mids and tweeters would be good, considering HK is 2 levels up from the base system (over here at least). That is disappointing.

It's not that they're bad in absolute terms, but they are the weakest point - slightly aggressive, make you want to scrunch your ears up a bit as you crank up the volume. Probably cheap components in the crossover plus classic "bright" sounding metallic dome tweeters. Bavsound units really improve things, not sure what other mids and tweeters you could source that are well matched to the factory amp and the other speakers.

That is interesting!
Do you know what impedance the HK mids and tweets are?
I have focal 100krs components in my c class ATM which initially sounded really bright and I had to adjust the crossovers and turn the treble way down on the head unit to get them sounding good.
The clarity they give is amazing, and being 4's they should fit the G30..

I was hoping specing the HK would save me doing another install, but I'll wait and see (or hear) what it's like when it arrives

I think they're 4 ohms and the underseat woofers are 8 ohms but don't quote me.

The HK amp is rated at 50w to each mid+tweeter and 125w to each woofer, but I'm not sure that's RMS @12v. The Bavsound units are easy to drive and their response curve is ideal: after careful listening I have genuinely decided they sound best with the equaliser set flat all the way across on my G30....

Just to add to this. I was listening to 'Why so serious' from the dark knight. About 3.30 into the track there's a lovely bit of bass. It came through beautifully.

I'd say the bass in the HK is mellow not harsh. Fits the persona of the 5 series I think...
