Tail end pipetip exhaust muffler are smokey and black

Hi Guys

My 530e M sport has very black & smokey exhaust pipe tips (both sides)

I can see some chrome colour on the top and corners but in the centre both up and down it is black with greasy black smoke - i used a tissue paper and surprised to see the outcome

My questions

1.Are they fully chromes pipetips and shows nice shine throughout the tip (i meant they are not half black and half chrome)?

2. In case they are all chrome then any suggestions how should i clean to bring them back in shiny n nice look?

thanks

The tips are polished chrome on the outside but 'unfinished' on the inside.

I use a metal polish and a rag to clean the black stuff off. It comes off quite fine with some effort.

So is that dirt on top of the chrome, or is that the chrome is coming off leaving a black undercoat?

Have you tried scraping the black with something sharp to see if it's chrome underneath?

i have tried and can see a little silver surface but cant configure if that is chrome or metal as i did little, did not go harder on that

so should i use metal polish and then see or keep trying to scratch...not sure though

To me, it looks like they're just pitted.

I would try and polish them up, they won't end up looking any worse.

Go hard or go home i think is the appropriate attitude here.

It's just caked on. Get some metal polish and start rubbing, it will come off. Enjoy

I have had to clean the chrome tips once during the winter with Autoglym metal polish and they cleaned up fine. The trick is to wash them when the car is washed to stop build up. I wouldn't scrape or use wire wool as the chrome layer looks to be quite thin (happy to be proven wrong). Best to use a polish or metal polish and then keep them clean.

The passenger side on mine gets dirtier (UK) than the other side - I don't think both sides "open" all of the time if at all on the 530e.
