The fastest I've driven was with my 2011 528I 248km/hr / 155mph.
With the M550I I hit 195km / 120mph. Laws have changed in Ontario. If they catch you doing 50kph or 30mph over the speed limit, your car will be impounded, driver's license suspended and up to a $10,000 fine! lol

My car is de restricted from DME tuning flash. I've hit 260+ but the speedo stops reading any further. I still saw the rpm's climbing

The sport suspensions are important for those speeds. Was so comfortable i could cruise at 155 with one hand on the steering wheel and a drink in the other if i wanted. By contrast i also imported my 06 Chevy Impala SS and it was so floaty above 120mph i thought it would crash on curves so only went flat out on straights. |

M550 is faster than 155 mph
I read where the speed is limited to 155 mph. But i swear to you that yesterday my 2018 M550 took me to 159 Mph and was still climbing, when i got too scared to continue. I guess BMW lied to us :-) Amazing BEAST of a car!

My old E46 M3 was de-restricted after an evolve tune.
Got that to wind past the 180mph on the speedo and it was still pulling but I ran out of road so had to back off. I think that still had another 10-15 mph in it before v max. |

The M550/M5 are built to cruise at very high speed.

I’ve read a number of posts that suggest that M550l’s (at least pre-LCI) came to the US with 130 mph speed limiter. However, when I look at 2018-2019 ordering and pricing guides, stock M550i’s came with 19” performance runflats (i.e., tires that would be safe at 155 mph). The only option that would would’ve been non-performance were in 2019 where 19” all-seasons were offered. Am I missing something here? If the speed limiter was based on tire ratings, wouldn’t pre-LCI cars (absent choosing the all-season option) have a speed limiter of 155?

If you wanted all season tires you would get the 19" rims square set up. However it also meant non performance tires and speed limit of 130 at factory. |

I haven't had mine over 120, and then only briefly. My last car had 155 MPH limiter and was built for high speed cruising; you could set the cruise control for 120. I never was comfortable much past 110 for extended periods. The faster I go, the more it occurs to me that a failed wheel or tire at that speed could ruin my whole day. Plus, we don't do that on the Interstate. If I'm cruising much over 85-ish, it's on a remote stretch of 2-lane with the possibility that a critter of some sort is going to run out onto the road.
Hell, even my plane doesn't get much past 130. |

Ive had my 18 up to 170 via gps. Still had quite a bit more, but it felt very unstable. So I eased on out of it.

I think that's the cool part. I ran my 2018 540 up to 209kph and frankly, when I glanced at the speedo THAT'S what scared me! lol I knew I was going fast but had no idea it was that fast.

That's the truth. I was not paying attention to speed (was focused on another car, and that's all I'll say about it) and noticed the wind noise. That's when I glanced at the HUD and saw how fast things had gotten.

I thought there was a speed limiter? Just got a 2022 M550xi (20" rims) and got it to 160 before I had to ease off - weren't these supposed to be electronic limited to 155? My old F95 wasn't either, and neither has any M Drivers packages or the like.

The speedo will always indicate slightly higher by law. It's to avoid you getting a ticket for exceeding the speed limit when the Speedo states you were not.
I believe here in the U.K. the police traffic cars have a calibrated speedometer that reads the true speed. Presumably tyre wear may also affect the reading albeit by a tiny amount. |
