Is little jerky downshifting from 2nd to 1st normal?

Hello i recently bought a 2018 540ix xdrive, its 60 000km/37 200 miles. It has 8 speed automatic. The transmission shifts smooth on all gears but when decelerating slowly to a stop (with foot off the gas pedal) , it downshifts from 2nd to 1st harshly and i feel it like a small bump.

The issue is more noticeable when im lightly applying the brakes just before stoping the downshift decelerates further the car and .. i have to sometimes accelerate a little in the last moment to stop where i wanted not before.

It does it more noticeably in comfort mode, when in sport mode its much more smooth. It happens maybe 50-60% of the time. Tested under max acceleration there is no clutch slipping, no problems, only smooth shifts. Car software is up to date. Previous owner changed transmission oil and filter at bmw dealership. Downshifts from 8to7 7to6 6to5 5to4 4to3 3to2 are perfect.

Previously owned e46 manual, compared to it the G30 is like a spaceship.. this is the only annoying issue... Is this a normal behaviour for modern bmw automatic transmissions or may there be a problem?

Yeah, mine does that too. I haven't paid it much mind, since it doesn't seem to clunk or do anything harsh. Just a bit firm on that down shift into 1st gear. Curious if others have seen this, especially if it's turned into a problem later.

BTW, mine is the same as yours, 2018 540i xDrive with about 62000 miles on it.

sounds like worn 1st gear synchro

(unless of course the ZF doesn't have a synchro then it's worn something else!)

Does it happen only in automatic mode? If i downshift manually it is... butter smooth. I think if it was a problem it should affect manual downshift too..

Haven't tried it that way. Also, may should try it in sport mode. One thing I've noticed is that this car seems to be slow about shifting from 2nd to 1st. It makes for awkward acceleration when entering the roadway, sometimes. When I'm braking and almost to a stop but then get on the gas to make a turn, there seems to be a delay to downshift, and then a sudden acceleration. Nothing feels "bad" about it, in terms of there being something wrong, but it's kind of annoying.

Yeah it spoils the overall comfort of the car, in sport it is almost unnoticeable, very strange, maybe in sport the shift is a miliseconds faster so its smoother, in the end maybe ill learn to live with it..

To be honest, if this is the most annoying thing I have to live with, I'm fine with it. I've had way worse and more numerous annoyances in other vehicles.

I tried decelerating and did a manual downshift from 2to1 and still feel it. Maybe I downshifted too soon lol
