M550 low MPG, should I be worried?
I’ve had my ‘21 M550 for about half an year now. I bought it used at 9k miles, now it is at 15-16k. My MPG in city traffic has been 9-11 MPG. I was not very concerned because it is a V8 after all. But a have friends with M5 and X6 M50 averaging 14 in the city.
I am not an aggressive driver most of the time. Should I be concerned about the engine and should I take the car to a dealer? |

Don’t just look at the MPG…what is your average MPH? Looking at both of those averages can help when comparing fuel consumption. The lower your avg MPH…the lower your MPG will usually be. It helps paint the picture…a low average MPH means that the engine is consuming fuel…but you’re not driving very fast or far…which means that there’s probably more idling….and you’re experiencing more stop-n-go driving….with high revs from take offs & then having to stop.
The higher the average MPH…it means that you are experiencing more consistent driving dynamics. Perhaps timed lights, driving on boulevards/parkways…or roads that don’t have a lot of stops signs or traffic lights whcih allows you to get up to speed and maintain a consistent speed for longer distances.

Can you share a picture of the fuel consumption?
Reset the counter at the start of the journey and then we can see how the journey went along showing your consumption as you travelled along wih finally your average including speed as earlier stated It’s a heavy car and agree heavy stop start traffic is going to use a lot of fuel It can be efficient on a gentle run, around 50mph constant seems to be the sweet spot where it can be quite amazing really for its power and size As suggest eco pro may help as it will dull the throttle use , I use that in town myself where there’s no point having anything better as you can’t use the performance anyway |

A few things that could be a little off, yet not trip a fault code or warning you can check: 1) Inspect the engine air filters, and either blow them out or replace if dirty. 2) Insure tires are inflated to recommended pressures. Also drive in comfort or eco mode, not sport or sport plus. When in sport or sport plus the engine will run in low gearing, using more fuel. |

That does seem low to me. I wouldn't say you should be worried, but I picked up mine 3 years ago and never reset anything. So after three years of data with probably a 50/50 mix of city and highway driving, my average reads 20.2 mpg. I don't do anything to preserve fuel economy. I am probably a 50/50 mix of comfort and sport/sport+ and I like to step on it from zero.
I am guessing if the car is running right, it's probably misleading and needs a reset of some sort. Start the clock over maybe.

That I don't know, the car is not with me right now, but I will check it out. If I had to bet my house on it, I would guess over 30mph.

I think the M550 gas mileage is great. Back in the early '70s, my Hemi Roadrunner with two fours and a progressive linkage got 13 mpg if I was judicious with the throttle and kept it running on the back two barrels. If I was on the freeway and hit a headwind, the other six barrels opened up and mileage dropped to 8. But then, Sunoco 260 (104 octane) was only 35 cents per gallon at the time. --Bob

Was it modified with two 4's or did they come from the factory like that? I see a lot of them on BaT with 6-packs.

Joe, the Hemi was a 426 c.i. engine that came from the factory in 1968 (my car's year) only with two four barrel Carter carbs. The "Six Pack" you mention, a 3-2 barrel setup, was an option on the 440 c.i. engine and I believe even on a smaller 340, though I may be wrong about that. The second generation Hemi, nicknamed the "Elephant Engine", was made from 1964 to 1971. I have never seen a Hemi with anything but 2 fours. The Hemi was the big dog and a lot of fun in its day! --Bob
