My car recently ran an OTA maps update. Since then, I've noticed some changes to regular routes I take.

As an example, car started suggesting a different route to a trip that I take very regularly. Usually i would assume it's due to traffic, etc. But today it tuned out that the suggested route is neither the fastest or shortest (my criteria is set to fastest and dynamic). Check out the images below where you can see the first route is 5.5miles arriving at 19:00 with 1min of traffic. When I ignored the turn off and carried on with my usual route distance was only 4.7miles arriving at the same time. Both routes are A roads with traffic info.

This isn't the only route where I've noticed the changes. Plenty of other small changes at junctions, etc. Anyone else notice strange things since the recent maps update?

Same experience with the OTA 2019-1 update here. So I did a USB update to 2019-2 last week and so far, all seems back to normal

beat me to it, was just going to say that the 2019-2 EVO map is available. Downloading it now.

Don't know if it's the same for others but the download always takes hours. Assume they've put a bandwidth limit on it their end?

Is there any way to force these updates? Think I’m supposed to have OTA but they’ve never updated. Haven’t purchased usb update so can’t use that option.

I think the it's updated are small updates where as the downloads a re a complete map (Western Europe in my case)
I've only had 1 pay update ever which was shortly after picking up the car, I've always downloaded the map every quarter which might explain why I've not had an it's since.

Just to add to APs points, I've only had one OTA. That's because I forgot to download the USB update for the first quarter this year. However, it came very late. I.e. - my car only updated few weeks ago whereas USB updates have been around for a while. As it was rightly pointed out OTA updates are much smaller. My car shows two versions when you go into Map version. It shows the larger Europe as 2018-4 and the OTA as 2019-1.

I wonder whether OTA is triggered by the level of changes in maps in your local area. Just speculation as I'm not sure. Might be worth asking Genius for some help on this.

If it's an OTA, takes about 20-25 mins.

USB downloads take ages, so best done overnight. However, once you plug the drive to the car it take about 15-20 mins.

Car needs to be active for the updates to start. But doesn't need to be once the update start running.

Weirdly, I never got 2019-1 not for want of trying. However yesterday I downloaded 2019-2 and installed without a hitch.

From what I understand, OTA updates are very localised and offer only local map data.

USB updates are a lot more comprehensive and cover the entire region, plus my dealership has said it also provides updates to the navigation system itself.
