MY2020 BMW m550 - release date

When is 2020 M550 hitting the market? April or August

It is going to get some exciting updates i hear.

First the engine is going up to 523 HP (similar to 750 and V8 x5)

New additions to option list possibly?

Assistant drive PRO package instead of Plus with traffic jam assist (lets you drive hands free in traffic longer)

Alcantra headliner in colors?
New exterior colors?

Production starts in July I believe, so guessing Fall-ish they should start to hit dealers?

The current M550i motor is underrated and has 520+ hp already. It's different than the 4.4 V8 TT that is in the pre-LCI 750i and 650i and has considerably more horsepower. Is the M850i motor just the M550i motor but rated at it's true HP? Or does the M850i have even more power than the 523 rated HP. Need to get an M850i on a dyno to know for sure.

Not sure if they will add the pro package yet - might be held until the LCI for the 2021 model similiar to the 7-series.

I do not think you are correct. All v8s in BMW (except M5) up until now are N63B44M3￿engine which has 456 HP and 480 lb torque. Clearly stated in all BMW manuals and materials.

https://www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/5-se...E&gclsrc=aw.ds

The MY2020 model M550 will have the new engine N63B44T3 along with the rest of V8s (yes 850 included).
523 HP
553 lb torque

Plus i hope it will get new features and updates that 750 got (adaptive laser lights, alcantra headliner, remote start etc)

BMW is widely known to underrate HP figures at times and with the G30 M550iX that appears to have happened in a larger way. The stock engine has been dyno'd at 540 HP and 595 TRQ (including on a Mustang Dyno). That same engine can obviously be tuned to deliver power in large bands and it appears the M550 got the treatment that other cars did not at the time (I suspect t was related to the then still incoming M5). The Dinan Stage 1 was dyno'd at 590 HP, a 50 HP increase over the stock figures attained.

What is unclear is if the new engine is simply being more accurate with HP figures now that now the M5 is out, or it also is underrated and may be good for more.

I hope it's the same engine because it would drive me absolutely nuts considering I just bought a new 2019. I don't need the power - scratch that - yes I do.

It's better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it!

I am correct. On paper the m550i only has 10 more hp than the 650 and pre- lci 7 series but they are grossly underrated and have about 100 more hp along with similar torque figures. What bmw “rates” the m550i is not necessarily what the truth is. Politics come in play and bmw would never rate the 2018 m550i with the Same hp figures as the f10 m5.

I’m sure the lci 5 will get the laser lights and whatever new feature the 7 got but that won’t be due until the lci which will start production in July of 2020 as a 2021 model.

Exactly. I initially thought it def had more power than the m550i motor since the 850i does 0-60 in about .02 sec faster but a forum members brought to my attention that the gearing in the 850i is a lot shorter in the first 3 gears which would attribute to faster acceleration. Guess we’ll find out soon enough.

If you guys believe your garage Dyno numbers for non modified M550 more than you believe BMW numbers - it is fine by me.
Than by the same logic - the new engine is going to have 600_ HP on your garage Dyno

The fact of the matter is - BMW is putting new engine in M550 staring July 2019.
Based on that white paper - that engine went through serious redesign.

I have no reason to dout BMW 80 HP and torque increase numbers.
But no matter what you believe - all one has to do is go and drive
M850 with the new engine and
M550 with the outgoing engine to see the difference for themselves

I like the M850 engine better. Pulls harder, more responsive, sounds more aggressive.

For those who just got M550 - I know how you feel. I just got x5 5.0 and this thing is getting a new engine in July as well (call it M50 x5 now)
BMW just did the same thing to 750 owners.
Look at 750 LCI staring in march 2019. 5 series is going through the same in July

5 series LCI is July 2020, but “new” motor is this Year.

With that said, it’s all hearsay at this point. Will see later on this year once the new motor is out and is on a dyno.

When did you drive both the M850 and M550 back to back? Was this on a track, around town or timed sprints?

BMW notoriously underrates their engines.

Yes, I would believe a professional dyno done on multiple machines (including a Mustang dyno) than BMW's brochure.

I test drove a bunch of cars while looking for X5. Just a dealer test drive, highway, streets.
My brother in law has 550 so I'm familiar with the car. I have the same engine in the X5, so i know the engine very well.
But my experience is irrelevant. Go try it fro yourself and see what you think.

All I'm saying - it is pretty exciting news. Not every day BMW gives you a new engine and new features hopefully for the same price.
That makes 550 quite a bargain
523HP + for a base price of 75K

It’s in the air really. It was in the bmw product pipeline that the entire g30 line will get new engines for the 2020 models, but seems a little weird to put a new engine one year before the LCI.

It’s all in air - for your sake though would be good if the new motor is in the 2020 model so you can at least take advantage of that before the 2021 LCI.

Would certainly be odd to put new engine before LCI but not like that hasn't been done before (just not recently, to my memory...)

Last dealership I spoke to wasn't convinced the new engine was going to be in the 550 since it would take it way too close to the M5. We shall see in the summer.

Dinan measured the current M550i at 539hp. They were only able to get another 57hp out of it.

Factory Rated HP M550i: 455 (539 Measured)
Factory Rated Torque M550i: 480 (589 Measured)

Dinan is known to dyno cars on the high side. I am not saying '18-'19 is at stated 453HP or much more than stated number. My '18 M550 is plenty faster. It felt just as fast if not faster than my ESS Tuned '15 F80 M3, which is over 500HP. If that is not enough, it felt just as fast as my '18 X6M.

I am glad that BMW is placing 520+ HP in newer M550i and not charging $100+k for it. Will it make me sad that I have 453HP M550i, absolutely not. It is a great car and I am happy for the car with the price I paid. Who knows, there may be 575HP M550i Competition coming out in a few short years.

For those with '19 M550 - congrats on amazing car.
For those who ordered or will order '20 M550 - advance congrats on what may be even more amazing car.

Enjoy driving folks!

BMW always under rates their engines, as you know. The G30 M550 evidently took that to another level. You are not driving a 453 HP M550i, various dynos posted confirm Dinan published results (done on 2 machines including a Mustang).

I also agree, this car is plenty fast and Dinan's Stage 1will likely get it closer the new engines actual output. Interested to see real work dynos on the new car - the M5 Comp was way under rated.

I’m new hear but have been on the “other” forum for several years.

I only have a little to add to this thread. The dealer that says they may not put the 523 engine in it because it’s to close to the M5 needs to rethink that. Credible data says the M5 really has around 700 hp. With a quarter mile in the high tens and 130 MPH, it’s an absolute rocket. Most exotic sports cars can’t beat that.

Hi Everyone,

I'm just curious as to why people don't just wait until this time next year, as you'll get the revised V8 AND the LCI enhancements for MY 2021???

Is it a timing thing?

Again, just curious, as that's the reason I'm keeping my car for an additional year, and ordering a 2021 M550i next Summer...

A lot of it is timing: people coming off lease, totalled car, tired of what they are driving, etc

As far as LCI is concerned the info available is that most of the non-body changes happening have happened this year and next year will be primarily body changes only.
