M550i has 2 cats, same location as the F90, between the manifold and exhaust.

thanks. so changing to say a couple of high flow cats is not an easy feat like say the M340i i see.

Never changed my cats, but I heard its a bit of a pain as the space between the engine and firewall is tight, so you have to maneuver a bit.
