Active shutters/grille

Apologies if this is posted in the wrong place.
Recently I noticed that the active grille is staying open after a drive and not closing.
But if I press the start button 3 times to enter diagnostic mode the shutters will close but then after driving again they remain open. If I don't do this then they stay open and don't close at all.
Any suggestions or thoughts?

Known issue, take it in for warranty inspection.

I don't recall ever seeing mine open. Mine always appear to be closed.

If there is a known issue does that mean the fans won't kick in when the shutters are open?

I've only seen mine open a few times, in the garage after a drive, with the fans running. Usually, they are closed, with the fans running after a drive (I assume pulling air from the lower openings). I would assume there is a malfunction in the OP's shutters.

Same here. The fans run with them closed.

Did you get a check engine light (CEL)? I did. I took my 540i to the dealer and Service Advisor (SA) said that the lower shutters were staying closed. Gave me an X5 to drive until the shutter parts are replaced. Get it checked because you don't know if they are operating properly.

I haven't really paid too much attention to mine. Are they supposed to close when you turn the vehicle off?

I also got the CEL and when they got the codes out it was saying that my lower active shutters were staying closed. Not good They have replaced the lower shutters and now they are working as designed. I waited overnight to make sure the car was cold. Then took a movie of the operation of the shutters. It is interesting to me because I am retired and have no hobbies. So when you shutdown your engine the lower shutters go open unlike the kidney grill shutters which go closed on engine shutdown. On a cold start the lower shutters go about 1/2 way closed then open for a few seconds then they go closed until the car warms up. The kidney grill shutters stay closed upon a cold engine startup. The lower shutters move in an upper direction. .

I think there are a few variables. When it's really hot outside or if I've been driving it hard, my vents will stay open for a few minutes after parking with the fan running. Sometimes the fan will continue to run after the vents close.

Colder days or I haven't been driving too hard just before parking, the fan will run with the vents closed (and usually for a shorter amount of time).

In all cases the fan is off, vents closed, and car is fast asleep by 10 mins or so after parking.

Just an update, had the car in today for a brake fluid change and while it was in I asked them to check the active shutters. They came back and said the bottom one had broke causing the top to stay open. Car is still under warranty so they are changing them for me.

I have a 2018 M550 that had similar lower active louvre issues. Took it in to the dealer and they said this is a known issue and the recommendation from BMW was to disable the louvre in the open position. The problem originally did trigger a CEL. Probably fine in Texas where I live but up north I would prefer them to go closed for engine warm up.

I would have demanded they fix it. BMW has extended the warranty on this to 15 years, 150,000 miles, so its a free fix until then. While leaving the shutters fixed in the open position may work, that is not how the car is supposed to operate. Some dealers may not wish to do warranty work simply because the reimbursements suck for them...

My car needed the upper servo motor that operates the shutters replaced a few months ago. I signed off the invoice for reimbursement and the bill was like $180...and the invoice claimed they had to remove the bumper cover, upper front engine covers and other stuff to get to it. The part was at least half of that, so they only got 1/2 labor reimbursement for the work.

Figure the lot guy has to move the car to service, then after service it is vacuumed and washed, then an invoice written and the lot guy returned the car out front. All for the $90 they collect in labor charge? They are losing money fixing these shutters unless then can get some add on work.

For the USA the original warranty extension was 10 years/120,000 miles. The warranty was lengthened to 15 years, 150,000 miles per the letter I received from BMWNA April 2020.
