Exterior looks exactly like I expected. It's very 7er but that's not really a bad thing. Best 5 series interior ever. Leaps and bound better than the F10.

Looks like more a LCI (life cycle impulse) to me than a brand new redesign. I was expecting more significant improvements such as more extensive using of carbon fiber and given the new Mercedes E Class far superior interior for example. I guess BMW is playing safe, but for the average Joe on the streets this car will look exactly like the old one. It will be interesting to see how sales will perform.

Too bad the M550i still uses the 4.4L V8 with all its issues. I wonder when the new 4L V8 will start being used.

Also, it's too bad that the 540i engine is weaker than that of the Mercedes E43.

Regarding the interior - I like the displays better on the E Class - larger and also placed better.

Overall, somewhat disappointing unless the handling is now noticeably better than that of the competitors.

Well that's not really comparing apples to apples, is it? One's AMG tuned and the other is not even M tuned. Despite that, a non-M BMW at 4.9 seconds 0-60mph gives the 4.5 seconds E43 AMG a run for its AMG badge.

what's the black part in between the kidney grills? Looks like a sensor at the bottom, but what's that whole black piece for?

What's the story with the video (and some shots) of the eDrive model having "normal" DRL rings in the headlights and not the kidney-connected? Is that maybe the difference between xenon and adaptive LED?

I find digital dashboard completely useless.
I prefer the old fashioned one.

It's funny, digital dashboard is probably less expensive than the analog, but they are even charging additional ~500 for it

Anyway, when you have HUD you do not even use the dashboard.

Those are the standard in Europe LED non-adaptive headlights.

RADAR most likely. There's also a camera there that's part of the surround view system.

So the M550i xdrive should weigh about 4295 lbs, that's really pretty amazing!

Lets compare to my old Mercedes C63 (09), which had a V8, NO AWD, and was significantly smaller (8.6" less length, 2.8" less wide, 1.6" lower).

W204 C63:
Weight: 4,034 lbs
HP: 451
Torque: 443

G30 M550i xdrive:
Weight: 4,295 (estimate based on savings from 540i xdrive)
HP: 455/456
Torque: 479/480

The AWD system alone can add 180-200 lbs to a car, take that away and the M550i is almost the same weight as the old C63.

given this information I have no doubt it will hit 0-60 in under 4.0 seconds and if the steering is similar to the M3 I have it will be a fun car to drive despite its size (and roughly the same price as a M3)

thanks.

The AMG E43 will compete against the M550i and the M550i looks like it will hand the melted merc its ass.

The new e-class is a chintz fest inside and looks like its based on a cheap vodka bar from the back streets of Moscow.

Handling? When did that become a requirement for a Mercedes fan?

But ETTO.

I wonder if we'll see a lot more of the M550i models now it's M performance. The current 550i seems far less common on UK roads than any other 5er model.

Can't wait to see how bonkers the M5 will be given the stated M550i performance figures.

I really hope we can order these without that bullshit digital dash. Complete garbage. I don't see anything in the US ordering guide about it being an option though. I do see an option for LED Headlights. So glad these aren't required. I would much rather have Xenon headlights with LED tail lights than LED headlights and trails. Though from the production photos it seem like BMW's is cheaping out on us and still making the Xenon headlight turn signals bulbs.... Even though the F10 launch car had LED turn signals and they took them away at LCI. What a rip off.

This seems to show an option for quilted leather like the 7 series has:

Awesome. Thats a must have for me now. Regardless I'll be waiting for either the 530e or 540d versions so maybe these will be available later. I wish they would just release that 520d version here in the US but pretty much no chance of that.

The technical update to the N63 fixed pretty much all the problems with it, would not be surprised they label it as N64.

Not nice design

I do not like Mercedes at all, but after 2017 5 serie I will think about Mercedes. 2017 5 Serie is worse than previous one.

If you look at European prices the E43 is priced against the M550i. The E400 is priced against the 540i.

So it's actually Mercedes who is behind on power.
