N63TU2 reliability

I know the N63TU1 has it's share of oil consumption issues, but did BMW fix the issues with the T2 iteration? Anybody have an M550i with a good amount of miles on it? How has oil consumption been? Any other common engine issues?

I've heard all of the issues, but I decided to buy a 2019 M550i anyway. I have less than 3,000 miles on her now, but so far so good.

My M5 drank a quart every 750-1000 miles and techs said it was within spec.
I have 1400 miles on my 2019 M550 and level is still full and I do some spirited driving, so this one seems 100% better than my F10

I'm at about 23k miles with an aggressive tune on it. No issues so far and running strong 💪

26k miles on my '18 m550 and no issues of any kind. Has so far been the most reliable BMW I've owned!

Approaching 33,000 on a 2018 M550 purchased in May 2017. I think I've added a quart once between an oil change. No issues with engine. Runs better than new right now.

Had a 2014 F10 550 than needed a couple quarts here and there. Turned in at 46,000 with no issues either.

Coolant lines

I've had mine in the shop on 2 occasions for coolant line changes - first was a recall the second was due to leaks in all the replaced lines (5 I think).

If it wasn't for those issues I'd say it was bulletproof, unfortuantely those 2 visits to the dealership left me without the car for over 5 weeks in total.

Dave, Is that on the M550i's v8 engine ? - I see your signature shows a 335d

It is yes, 2018. I need to update my signature - thanks for pointing that out.

Unhappy

Well, mine is now in the shop with a coolant leak @ 28000kms..

2 weeks ago I got a coolant low warning, had it topped up 2/3 litre at a nearby dealership. I couldn't get it booked in for service as I was travelling, so I parked it @ YYZ for a week. Came back, started driving and the coolant warning light came back again. Now that I think of it, there might have been a stain underneath, but I got back late and was jetlagged, so wasn't paying attention. Had it topped it up again the next day at a nearby dealership and the tech found some moisture underneath.

Got a Monday appt, and the assessment was a leak in one of the hoses... so it now sits waiting for parts. Dealership got me in a NX rental for the night. I'm hoping this is resolved by tomorrow.

Not sure if other N63TU2 owners have had similar issues. Reading about the other poster having their car in to get all of their hoses replaced is giving me anxiety..

My younger brother on his M750 with 10k miles just had one of his turbos replaces, the coolant lines had an issue and wasn't flowing. If he didn't have warranty would have been $8700 to fix. On each of my BMW's aside from the M5, each has had turbos replaced at one point under warranty

Good luck. My lines had to be ordered against the VIN from Germany due to the recall nature (or so I was told) so it took a few days to get them before they couldbe installed. They thought the leaks were gone but after 5mins of driving the same thing happened again and the car was gone for another week.

Did the i drive system alert you when you need to add a quart?

I just saw from my latest BMW CCA newletter that there is now (another!) oil consumption lawsuit on the N63 series of engines, including up to 2019 M550s, etc. Here is the list of included vehicles:

•2013-2019 BMW 750i/750Li
•2013-2018 BMW 650i
•2013-2019 BMW 650i Gran Coupé
•2013-2016 BMW 550i GT
•2014-2016 BMW 550i
•2017-2019 BMW M550i
•2018-2019 BMW M850i
•2014-2019 BMW X5
•2014-2019 BMW X6
•2018-2019 BMW X7

Link is here.

FWIW my '18 M550i now has 12,500 miles and I don't have a single engine related issue, nor have I had to add oil. Only my experience but I'm happy so far. A buddy of mine recently bought a used '16 X6M (4.4L V8) with about 32,000 miles on it. At 33,200 miles he had to replace all the turbo coolant lines at his cost of $6K. Ouch.

the purpose of this thread is that I want to tune my car, but am worried that BMW will then blame the "common" N63TU2 issues on the tune, which we all know is the unfortunate truth.

I wouldn't be overly concerned by that. The issues on here are either known (as part of a recall) or found to be as a result of something else (in my case defective lines). I don't see how coolant lines could be impacted by a tune - yes they help cool the engine but you also can't change the pressure of the lines with a tune, someone correct me if I'm wrong...

Now if you blew a gasket, that would be a different story.

you are absolutely right, but just have that stigma stuck in my head that the dealer will blame it, even though has a recall, etc.

Glad to hear N63TU2 runs good so far, hopefully it will stay that way in the years to come

If that happened let me know. I’ll give you my VIN plus others who had the same issues for them to have a hard look at before casting judgement on the tune.

I found some discussions on the reliability of the N63TU2 engine but most are from 2017 and a lot of time has passed so I thought I'd ask now in 2020.

I'm looking for a well equipped 540i XDrive on the German market (no luck so far) but I've found a really nice M550i XDrive at our local Czech BMW dealer for basically the same price and I'm wondering if that would be a very risky purchase.

https://www.bmwprosek.cz/karta-vozu-...edan--179.html
https://www.mdecoder.com/decode/b099797

It has 70k km which is about 44k miles and there are still 2.5 years of extended warranty left. My questions are:

1. What should a potential buyer check in advance - have there been any global recalls that the car might have missed?

2. Are there any mods or special care that would help the engine last longer? (Besides more frequent oil changes, of course). I'd rather invest $1k in advance than have to replace the engine for $5k+.

3. Are there any stats regarding the average failure of these engines? I plan to keep it for another 20-30k miles. What are the changes of the engine surviving a total of 75k miles? :-D

(Also I'm driving mostly short distances (30 minutes to the city center) and I'm afraid that's not very good for the engine...).

I had catless dp and bmw said that they wouldnt cover valve stem seals unless I removed them and redid oil consumption test and they said that if their was anything else wrong with the engine they wouldn't cover it because I could have cylinder washing due to not having cats we all know that these cars are open loop fueling and the wideband o2 sensor is before the cats so its bunch of bs and everyone says magnusson and they have to prove ,burden on them etc but the reality is unless you are a lawyer or have the money and time to go to court you really are at their mercy. BMW na wont help either they will say they aren't techs and they can request a review but you really are at their mercy.
