19" vs 20" rims

Which would be the more comfortable and refined G30 540i xDrive?

(a) An M sport package on 19" rims on passive suspension (704)
(b) an M Sport Plus on 20" rims on VDC suspension

They would both be fairly similar, biggest unknown would be the road conditions. The thinner sidewalls on the 20" would be more susceptible to blowouts and bent rims though.

I'm in the UK. Road surfaces here vary from sh*t to utterly sh*t. That's what puts me off 20" rims. They do look great though..

Each to their own but I actually prefer the looks of the 19" over the 20". I had adaptive suspension on my F31 on 18" (400M) but after test driving the G31 on 19" + standard M suspension, I dropped the VDC. I'm sure VDC is good, but I was very happy with the standard.

I have the option "A" and would not go up to 20" rims. Ride on 19" rims with 704 msport is comfortable and sporty enough. I have hit my fair share of yuuuge potholes. I like the look of the 20" rims but I dont think they would survive long where I live.

Side note (not directly related), had a loner 540 (non 704) on 18" rims, car was noticeably softer. I was actually surprise difference was that pronounced.

I'd say (b) but that is a guess as I've only driven with 20 on vdc

However I think was has to be said about vdc is what mode it is in for you to answer that question. If it's in comfort possibly would have the edge but if in sport then I'd guess it may be a tad worse

You really need to try yourself as regards any suspension ride type question.

The other variable to throw in the mix would be to have non run flat tyres.

For what it's worth I have 20 on vdc in the uk and am more happy with it compared to my previous f10 msport passive suspension on 19s but as I say that is with vdc in comfort mode.

I'll never put 20 inch rims on a five series ever again. The streets of Houston have demolished my wheels and bubbled my front tires. These Goodyear's do not ride very well, so I will replace them with Pirelli's.

And before you say I should have gotten the wheel and tire warranty, it was $6500 when I bought my M550i in January. I could buy a completely new set of OEM wheels and tires for far less than that.

The Goodyear F1 Asy 3 are horrible. Weak sidewall and embarrassment for Goodyear.

When you're ready, replace for Michelin Pilot Sport 3ZP. I've got one 540i 20" with P Zeros (after removing the Goodyear crap) and a second 540i 20" with Pilot Sport 3 ZP. The Michelin is a much better tire.

I think you mean shorter sidewall on the 20".

Thanks man. And you're right. This Goodyear's suck balls. I've had Pirelli's on my previous BMW and liked them. I'll give the Michelin's a look.

They clearly screwed up with the Asymmetric 3s as the 2s were the best RFTs going when they first came out.
Asymmetric 5s are the replacement for the 3s, which seem to have had a fairly short life.

I was literally just at Advantage BMW here in Houston because one of those crappy Goodyear tires has five bubbles in it thanks to all of the potholes here.

I can either buy a replacement or buy a brand new set of different tires. It sucks because I only have 5,000 miles on this vehicle and I don't need to replace the other 3.

It's just the dilemma of replacing a tire that you know sucks. That's probably the way to go from an economical point of view.

Leased car? If so, save the 3 Goodyear and put them back on before lease return.

Nope. It's mine.
