So long, m550i
Hello M5 competition.
I loved my m550 from day 1 onward. However, having just crossed 50k joyous miles I decided owning this car out of warranty isn't for me. I'll find out if the M5 can top it, but I think I'll always have a soft spot for the carbon black 550. |

Way cool, congrats. That silver with the light interior looks awesome.
Wheels, door handles, hood, side gills, mirror caps all looking sharp on the new ride vs the 550.

Thanks- I seem to be in the minority with my opinion that the chrome door handles were a nice touch on the early m550's, especially on a darker color. That said, I agree it's hard to argue the only improvement to the g30 is LCI f90. Surprisingly the 810m wheels don't get much love but I think they look good on the car.

I’m also keen to know how you think the M5 compares to the 550i. |

I always loved how the m550 drove in sport plus mode: smooth and seemingly endless power band and very controllable. The M5 in sport modes blows it away and is much louder/more aggressive sounding. While I knew the M5 would feel more powerful, I was unsure about how it would feel under typical highway cruising, wondering if it would match the super comfortable ride of the g30. So far, it seems like the M5 is fully capable of a fairly plush ride quality and really sails on smooth highways. I'm a big fan of the g30, but I have no doubt the f90 takes a lot of what I love and adds a bunch of HP and crisp handling dynamics... super satisfied with the switch. |

A quick few questions - does the M5 have a wider rear (the booty, if you will) than the M550i xDrive? And did your tach turn into an amber/orange hue at night time in the M550i?
I’m having a tough time between the two cars and am remembering the little idiosyncrasies that made me jump out of the F30 335i into an F80 M3. Thank you, and congrats! |
