Are the Goodyear F1 Asymmetric 5 any better than the 3?

Just curious if anyone has experience with the F1 Asymmetric 5 runflat? Is the casing better designed than the Asymmetric 3 (which most of us know has a weak designed sidewall).

My dealer tire guy tells me the 5 hasn't had the sidewall blowout issues that the 3 experiences.

Thanks in advance.

I don't have a positive opinion about any Goodyear tire. To me, those tires sucked since the 80s. Every set that ever came on a car from the factory, was totally unpredictable. In the rain, one minute you have traction, the next minute you're off into the woods somewhere…without warning. Forget snow if they are all seasons. You might as well call a flatbed.

Sorry to be so negative, but that's my personal experience for almost 40 years with Goodyear tires. It got to the point if they came on a car, I would replace them immediately.

Maybe the tire you're referring to is decent, I don't know. You'd have to look at the reviews on tirerack.com

I hear you. I've never been a fan of Goodyear either. However, new car arrived with Asymmetric 5 ROF. I'm digging around and asking people about it. Info I'm getting is while it's arguably a step down from the Michelin PS3ZP, the Asymmetric 5 appears to be a very close competitor overall. It has far improved wear over the Asymmetric 3 and I'm told should last 20K+ miles like my Michelin's have (on our old coral infused Florida roads). If online reviews are anything to live by, the Asymmetric 5 should overall perform as well as the PS3ZP in dry. Wet, the Goodyear is said to be better.

However,, the two areas that most concern me are overall runflat comfort/noise and strength of the sidewall. While the Asymmetric 5 runflat has more improved comfort and noise over the Asymmetric 3, I'm hearing it's still a bit behind the PS3ZP. So, that's not great if true.

Then there's the weak sidewall design of the Asymmetric 3 that has caused so many to throw away "good" tires just to avoid another sidewall buldge or blowout. My dealer tire guy tells me in the year or two he's seen cars coming from the factory with the Asymmetric 5 runflat, he hasn't seen anywhere the same level of failures as he does with the Asymmetric 3. He told me sidewall failure should no longer be an issue. FWIW from a tire guy, he also felt the Asymmetric 5 runflat is by far a better tire than the PZero runflat. He told me he's changed many PZero runflats, with still nearly half their tread remaining, due to tire noise.

So, it looks like I'll be rolling the dice and hoping Goodyear has grown up a little bit. If not, I'll join the group of people who throw $2K in the trash to switch to Michelin. Wish me luck. 🤞

So far I'm ok with mine. Pretty solid overall. Time will tell.
