Of course.
Typically, it competes with the M5.

Hope so, I've seen some rumours about 540i xDrive based G30 B5 (quite strange) here at forum

Unlike the model sliding around in the snow in the video, I think the 540 models mentioned in those "rumors" have probably already been produced, if not already delivered. And their engine specs appear to be stock BMW.

I'm thinking that Alpina has somehow expanded their offerings in terms of packaged equipment.
Would make sense for BMW since MB does that with AMG all the time.

There are rumors in german Alpina forums, that Alpina will surprise us in Geneva ... with two new Alpina B5s, the typical B5 4.4 BiTurbo with 608PS and an B5 3.0 BiTurbo with +/- 450PS.

Not trying to bash, but could someone explain the appeal of these cars to me in the current market?

They dont feature any of the cosmetic, hardware, body panel and performance upgrades that the M cars do, essentially offering less performance than the M cars and share almost the same price point.

To me the bolt on cosmetics, performance parts and tune does not warrant the price? I know Im probably looking at this the wrong way and Alpina has been a tuner since waaay back when before the options available now, so maybe I just need some education!

Would make sense, since the V8 is not available in the G30 in many markets Alpina is available.
So they need a 6 Cylinder model to sell there

Close with M Cars in terms of performance, but a different interpretation of power delivery, refinement and exclusivity!
They also offer x-drive and diesel engines so much more flexibility in their lineup!

Awesome if true.
Well, ...if they are expanding with two new B5 engines, that's fabulous.
The ALPINA-spec car (with a B58 motor) in one of the other threads stated the hp @ 250kw...which equals 340 hp.

Alpina should have released a b5 for the f10 generation, I'm sure many people would have liked an "awd m5". To be fair they did have an Alpina b6 awd model that came in grandcoupe form.

If they bring one out now it's sort of late to the party now that the m5 will be awd.

I'm sorry but there is nothing M about this m550 lol. It's just a bunch of emblems and nonsense to charge the ignorant consumer a few more bucks and attempt to justify it by saying the m division glanced over it. The B5 would still be competing with the m5. This brand dilution of the m division is getting out of hand.

The B5 is much closer to an AMG. Softer suspension, no DCT, you mash the pedal you go fast. Great highway cruiser.

Completely agree with the statement around brand dilution but you're wrong about the M550i. The M Sport F10 was nothing more than cosmetic changes to the standard car for the xDrive and on RWD you got 704 suspension. Nothing more besides M logos and aero kit.

In the G30 M550i you do get 704 plus several other suspension options along with bigger brakes. The M550i is actually a bargain relative to the 540ix since quite a bit is included as standard so there surprisingly isn't the huge markup that might be expected with a cosmetic M Sport Package. However, it doesn't have an S engine and most everything else is logos or included N/C options that would be a premium on the 540i. I would be happy to have the '320' option offered in the US to de-badge the car but not offering that is a BMWNA decision. The M550i is nothing more than the mainline V8 offering that seems to be trying to capture the spirit of past performance oriented sport 5's such as the E39 6-speed which has different final drive ratio, more performance oriented suspension and manual transmission but in a main-line package.

As others have stated, the Alpina is a different beast compared to the M cars. It offers an exclusive highway (cruise missile) stormer while the M cars are much more tuned for a more athletic ride. These cars all go after different segments.

If Alpina comes out with a 400+ HP 6-cyl variant then that would be very interesting since it would likely be a better balanced and lighter car than the V8 offerings.

///Marketing aside, I'm happy there are more variations of the lineup. I prefer to see that than more odd balls like the 5GT. I just wish BMWNA didn't limit what options we can order in the US.

The M550i doesn't actually come with 704 M sport suspension. Standard is Adaptive M suspension, 2VF. It includes a 10mm drop, and dynamic damper control with a M Performance set-up.
You can upgrade to Adaptive M suspension Plus/Professional, 2VW, that also include active roll bars and active steering.
