I just drove my M550 home in sport mode with the shifter to the left. Guess what… also super fast. And a better soundtrack

Company put me in a model S for work every now and then. I did over 20k miles on multiple Tesla's and people in my family still say if they were to get an EV, they would rather buy a Mercedes or BMW over a Tesla blah blah blah.... There has been too many times I see ppl with their 100k+ EQS sitting in a dark corner trying to charge at close to midnight. It's like putting yourself as bait out there waiting for something to happen. This is before we even start talking about how technically challenged other charging networks are. They can barely code for their lives, sub everything out to Chinese contractors and now deliver sub-par charging services. Many here swapped out run-flat tires after one bad incident, I myself included. You can't swap out charging network. That's also one of the reason why depreciation is off the roof on these EV as well. Last edited by BlueSander; 04-15-2024 at 09:57 PM.. |

In my mind EV's are good for distances around 50 miles each way. At that distance, you have a solid buffer for the round trip, factoring in extreme temperatures, hills, and other unforeseen circumstances, while not being dependent on public chargers altogether. That's good enough to cover grocery runs and work commutes for most of us, for which cases EV's are fantastic.

My E90 M3 routinely got no better than 15mpg, 280 miles per tank, and I was refilling every 4-5 days. You could see the fuel gauge needle drop which is why it came with a $1500 gas guzzler tax on the sticker. It was a bit of a hassle but I put up with it for 7 years because the car was so much fun to drive and practical too. But I never worried about getting to the nearest station to fill up, it didn’t get markedly worse mileage in rain or on hills, and the full power was always available. Why anyone would pay for an experience like that EV thread is beyond me.

The whole point of a car is convienience. I just don’t see waiting at a charging station for it to be fire and the waiting for it to charge as convenient.
You should have to rework your day around the charging, it should be the other way No doubt technooogy at some point will improve but at the moment , it’s a flawed approach It works for some but for most I just don’t get the practicalities at all |

I saw an interview with Gordon Murray, Christian Von Koenigsegg, John Hennessy and Mate Rimac. They were asked what the automobile meant to them. The most common answer was freedom. Having to plan your entire trip around charging networks only to sit for an hour each time is anything but freedom and convenience. It’s like when we’d visit our son in LA and you have to plan your entire day around traffic. Even he got fed up with it after 4 years. Sure the EV infrastructure will eventually develop to something approximating the gas station infrastructure but that still looks to be at least 10 years off. Long live the (G30) king.

if no charger, I take the V8. if my V8 dies I'm getting either a M3 or M5 (probably M3 as M5s would be gone by then) also our country's Green party when they were voted some seats they filled up our oil refinery with concrete, so thanks to them our gas supply is now bottlenecked by whether ships can bring refined oil into the country. where as our power is generated by wind and hydro (well the vast majority of it) so if big bullies attack our tiny colony at least I can still cruise around in luxury. but the gas supply is secondary. it just drives better than my gas cars so it was a no brainer at 40% discount. Any person who debates gas mileage in a M550 530 HP twin turbo V8, 4 door sedan, should be kicked in the face by a Donkey on steroids.
It's just Stupid.

I have an 840i GC loaner (regular service). Really excited to get some wheel time in any 8 GC. Its pretty badass. Handling is phenomenal, especially given the size. Doesn’t drive like a boat at all. Very planted. Not much roll. Good exhaust note, even in the 40i trim. The ride is very comfortable. Surprisingly so, even. But the seats are much sportier and not as comfortable as the G30 multi contour. I’m reserving judgment to try and get more time and mess with the position some more. But it COULD be enough to make me shy away from it on the next round. But damn, everything else about is super attractive. And I did fit my clubs in the trunk… barely… but you can’t fit much else with them.
This is the last car on the list for me to cross off, as far as potential alternatives. If I walk away from this still saying the next car is another, newer, G30 then it’s truly irreplaceable for me (given that Porsche isn’t attainable for my budget). It is funny how I get spoiled. The car is awesome but I know two things - I don’t want to go back to HK stereo and I can’t help but feel slow even though it’s still an objectively fast car with the B58. Sport plus and shifter to the left and I still never felt like the power could overwhelm me. The V8 is just a monster and it’s hard to go back from it.

I don’t dislike the rear view as much as you do, but like NGT2 I need space for clubs and a push cart (much prefer to walk). Was behind an Alpina B8 today and it looked really nice.

Pretty fun loaner! I do miss the V8. A V8 would make this car really fun. It’s hard to feel as comfortable in it though. As a one car, daily driver the M550 is just freaking hard to beat. I think I got the seat where I like it better but it’s just a more confined cabin by design. In some respects it’s a really cool feel and in some you feel like there’s just a subtle level of comfort you can’t seem to unlock. That’s how it feels to me after 24 hours, anyway. I imagine you just get conditioned if you drive it everyday. It’s enormous but it drives great.

90% of the time, my clubs are the only ones in the trunk. We all just meet at the club. Someday when I’m old and don’t workout two hours a day every day, I’ll walk the course for some exercise and to burn some calories. You can drink more when you take a cart😉
