I re-read the press release from: http://www.bimmerfile.com/2019/03/05...ation-hybrids/
It goes into further detail that the new OS (iDrive 7) comes with the new 3, X5 and 7 series. So as expected, we still have to wait for LCI. This would have been a surprise move.

I don't know why they bother with 35 mile range hybrids. In real world city driving those will be more likely 20-25 miles. Even with a short commute that's hardly a worthwhile range unless you charge your car all the time.

Another reason is that you can do 100% of your work commute on electric power if you don't have a long commute. Charging at home is easy if you live in a detached house. Third reason is the pre-cooling ja pre-heating function of the hybrid. More range would be nice, but even the new Audi A6 plug-in has only 25 mile range. Agreed. My daily commute (all city driving) is about 21 kms round trip. In the summer months I can do the entire commute on battery (traffic depending). I simply plug the car in every night. I haven't calculated the cost of the electricity but my fuel costs were reduced by more than 60% last year (a savings of approximately $2600) and I am getting some "green" cred with the kids .
The government rebate also helped (it was $8500 here which made the 530e cheaper than the non-hybrid 530) and I can drive in the HOV lanes without a passenger. I would definitely prefer more electric range but there are definitely reasons to buy the hybrid. Just my two cents (Cdn.) worth. |

While I would appreciate the extra range, and use it, what I really would like would be more power. Give me the standard B48 at 250 HP along with the electric motor and I will be a happy camper.
I have not had inadequate power in 14 months and I doubt I will BUT it is nice to know it is there if one suddenly needs it when passing at high speeds. |

Hopefully BMW will learn something from the Toyota Hybrid tech they're getting for designing the Supra, and charge the damn battery as you're driving like the Prius does. I like to use battery while doing city driving and charge the battery while on the freeway so when I get to my destination area, I can use batter there and back to the freeway. 16 mile range now is NOTHING unless you use it during city driving where ICE sucks.

Now if one could combine the Tesla powertrain with BMW interior and handling... WINNING!! .

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

I commute 60-65 km one-way daily, and current 46-50 km range (NEDC) is in reality 2/3 of that. If a new battery - on paper - has an extended distance of 60+ km it's better, but still too short. Range now in winter time is not more than 20 km at best, so more ePower... Best encouragement is to see in BMW Connected that in soon 40,000 km I've driven 12,000 km on electricity and saved 500 L of gas. |

The current setup is really good but I would like the option of a larger battery or adding a second one for more range if desired. BMW did a great job designing a phev that looks and drives like a BMW should. They did not compromise on that and that's why I have a 530e. Unfortunately, they only offer it with a specific size battery, electric motor, engine and very limited software settings to setup the car the way you would like it to perform. There should be at least one custom mode that you could program for your daily commute for example without having to change settings every time you start the car.

Does anybody knows if the 12KW battery will retrofit in a pre 2020 version of the 530e?

Similar to putting a higher capacity battery in your laptop. It should work. You'll probably see it in a couple of years when MY2020 cars are parted out and someone tries it out. |

Agree. If you live in a city where there are restrictions on driving an ICE in the city, then maybe it might make sense but otherwise it makes no fiscal sense to replace a sound relatively new and functioning battery pack.
