So I got a 2016 BMW 750i and a 2018 BMW M550i. I want to swap wheels, but I’m not sure if the TPMS will function properly. Since the tpms are both compatible, will I need to reprogram the TPMS to have it function properly?

Once you swap the wheels then in iDrive you will be able to reset TPMS and the new sensors will register after a short drive. Just make sure you don’t have any other sensors in the vehicle as you do this.

I think the 750i has slightly larger tire size - 275/35x20 rear vs. 245/30x20 in 550i? So unless you keep the tyres that each car has, you’d end up with “too big” in the 550 and “too small” in the 750…? If you also swap tyres, then easy to replace the sensors so effectively you keep current sensors and tyres in each car, just swap the rims. Assume your motivation for the swao is what they look like, bot cars have the same rim size, what I’m not sure of is the ET. Suggest you check all of these.

As long as the sensors operate at the same frequency, they will sync up through iDrive as stated above. There are two frequencies that are used in TPMS sensors: 315MHz and 433MHz. If you have BMW or BMW compatible sensors for the same frequency as your original sensors, they should work fine.

I have OEM TPMS sensors for the M550i. I was thinking of using the rim and tires from my M550i for my 750i. This is because I was thinking of making the car lower by decreasing the tire diameter, while keeping the same width of the tire. I got lucky for the offset since it is exactly the same with ET30.

I’m assuming the TPMS will still work as long as I reset it in my iDrive. Is that correct?

Also, thank you all for your inputs. They are all really helpful!

Did you verify that the TPMS sensors are compatible? If not, you can do it in a minute. Just pull up the wheel diagrams for one of your BMWs using www.realoem.com or www.bimmercat.com…then scroll down to the TPM sensor diagram. Scroll down to the correct 11 digit BMW part number and click on it. This will list all of the other BMW models that use the same sensor.

If they use the same sensor…then as others have already mentioned…the TPMS system will pick up the signal from each sensor once you go into iDrive and do a reset. The sensors only send a signal when the wheels are moving.

But you also have another issue that others have pointed out….the 7 series and 5 series DO NOT USE THE SAME SIZE TIRES!! Even though the wheels are compatible…the overall tire circumferences are different. Mounting tires that have the incorrect circumference will throw off your speedometer. You can mount 19” tires on either vehicle…but they need to have the correct specs. If you don’t know what the tire specs are….just turn to the tire inflation chart in each car’s owners manual. It will list the recommended tire sizes as well as the tire inflation for each BMW wheel sizes that were offered for each vehicle.

Thanks for the info!

Yeah I already checked the tire comparisons: 245/40/19 & 275/35/19 (M550i) and 245/45/19 & 275/40/19 (750i).

Now, everything is pretty much the same but the side wall is changed. Since the sidewall is changed, then the 750i would sit around 0.3in lower since the tire diameter is 0.6in lower and that’s exactly what I want. 750i is a lil too soft for my liking, so I figured that if I sit a lil lower, it can corner “a tiny bit better”. It also makes the 750i more aesthetically appeasing, in my opinion.

Mind double-checking if these are OEM TPMS sensors: https://www.bmwpartshub.com/oem-part...or-36106887146

Click the link below to see all of the BMW models that use the part number you linked to in your quote. All I did was take the 11 digit part number you posted and pasted it into the part number search field on the realoem website…and it gave a list of BMWs:

BMW part number 36106887146:

Hi, I’ll appreciate help here: I recently install TPMS into my car( shrader 28238 metal valves), it had rubber valves before. So, I try to do the reset in the Idrive to have temperature and pressure readings but nothing happen: I do the reset with the car stopped, then ride several milles, at different speeds and nothing. I check with bimmercode in the headunit to show pressure and temp, but finally I only have green tires on the screen and no pressure or Temp. What I’m missing?? Thanks

It requires more than the TPM sensors installed in the wheels. You need to have option code S2VBA.

BMW uses TWO different tire monitoring systems. The pic you posted shows that you have the FTM/RPA (flat tire monitor) system which uses the ABS wheel sensors measuring wheel rotation…this is how a loss of tire pressure is determined.

The TPM/RDC system (S2VBA) is the system that uses the wheel sensors mounted in the wheels. If you had this option, it would be obvious because the iDrive screen would say TPM instead of Flat Tyre.

Since BMW changed this system back around 2014/2015….they removed the RDC module and incorporated its function into the DSC control module….so if you have access to coding software or app…you may be able to switch from the
FTM system to the TPM system now that you have the wheel sensors.

You’ll have to do your research to see if it’s possible for your model, and if possible, do the coding to switch.

Again, if you had the TPM system…your screen would say TPM or Tire Pressure Monitor. When you have the FTM system, then the screen says Flat Tyre Monitor or FTM. You can see examples of screen shots of the FTM and TPM systems from various versions of iDrive.
