540xi w/ DHP vs. M550i w/o DHP

Hello fellow bimmers. My current lease of 2014 335xi is ending soon so I started to look for the next option. The new 5 series fits everything I need so it's a no-brainer for me. I played with the online configurator and came to the two options below:

540i xDrive
Cold Weather
Driving Assistance
Driving Assistance Plus
DHP
M Sport
Premium
H&K
M Sport Brake
Apple CarPlay
MSRP: $74020

M550i xDrive
Cold Weather
Driving Assistance
Parking Assistance
Apple CarPlay
MSRP: $76595

The prices are pretty close. M550i has a lot more standard options that I would have to pay extra on 540i (metallic color, H&K, M Sport, M Sport brake, etc.). The only real difference between the builds is DHP. I've never driven a car with one, and my local dealer does not have cars with DHP either. I'd like to get some thoughts from the forum: DHP or V8?

Thanks in advance!

Kan

I chose the M550
My 540i build was $72k MSRP and my M550 is $78k
even with the lower residual on M550, my lease monthly is $120 more on the M550.

but if I add M sport exhaust, xdrive and DHP to the 540 I would at about the same MSRP .

Adaptive M sport suspension is better than DHP, it is the main reason I selected the M550 over the 540

Think twice about the m performance exhaust if that's what you are eyeing. It's pretty aggressive.

In the real world get the additional extras and the 540i. A few years ago even the M5 probably wasn't as fast or agile... and do yourself a favour - don't even test drive the 550i

I'm leaning towards M550i too, mainly due to how close the prices are. My lease payment so far is $100 apart. I'm hoping the 2018 model residual will improve between now and the time I take delivery.

I had an E60 550i prior to my 335xi so I know exactly what you mean

Both configurations are actually similarly equipped, it's just M550i has more options I want as standard.

Best suggestion here . I've made a mistake and test drove X5 50i (after 35i) and never looked back......

I would get the M550i, the DHP package is should be better than the DHP on the 540i as the lesser doesn't get rear active steer with the AWD.

I agree the M550i has tons of standard kit and the price is pretty close even the same if you can get discounts and I would think the M550i will be a much better car as the M240i is vs the lesser version.

Edit: Just noticed your not getting the DHP, I would think the M550i would still be the better car as the suspension out of box is probably better.

I would go find a few cars to test drive, I know the M550i's are just starting to hit the shores.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've made my decision to go for M550 Just finalized the order with my CA today and now the waiting game begins.

We actually went the opposite. We had an E70 X5 50i and moved to F15 X5 40e. I found the 50i to be dangerously quick especially with a baby onboard

For a 2k difference, get the 550.

I drove the 540 and was quite impressed. Unfortuneately, there were no 550's to test drive, but I figure if I liked the 540, the 550 would be much better.

I had the same dilema you're having. 540 vs 550. I decided to go with the 550.

I'm super excited... April build with delivery in May.
