Type 2 portable charger 530e warning

So plugged my type 2 charger into a friends Renault Zoe today and it's now busted, charged for a few second clicked and now won't charge red error light internal current leakage.

Opened it up seems the sense line from the car side plug is leaking to earth. Likely the Renault did something weird and fried it.

So don't chance using your BMW portable charger (older version grey with yellow cable)on anything but a BMW.

Can't get the plug off to check inside as they are swaged on, it's a risk spending 100 bucks to buy the plug with cable only as that may not be the whole problem so gonna buy a new one.

Anyone in UK or Ireland's have one for sale? I rarely use it but would like to keep it in the trunk for peace of mind.

I’d sell you mine, but I am in PA US.

It sounds like the Renault has some issue as the J1772 plug should be universal.

I'm guessing the older BMW chargers may be Incompatible with the newest Renault system.

I figured like you no big deal this will be a simple plug and play but clearly the French and Germans don't like each other😂

Last time I try help a friend, he is only stuck a few days waiting on his wall charger install and it just cost me 250 Euro!!👎

Thanks for asking but I'm guessing 115/220v US/Euro wouldn't be a simple plug change.

The early Nissan Leafs had different charging cable connections/specs, maybe the Renault Zoe - if it was an early version - has a similar issue (Nissan/Renault alliance and all that).

All recent EVs should have connectors built to common standards (Type 1, Type 2, etc) and EV chargers should also be conformant to common standards (e.g. Fast Charge, rapid charge, etc)… so allowing your cable or EV charger to be used by other cars really shouldn't be a problem…

Yeah that's what I thought.

It's a brand new Renault and my charger is the old style BMW one from 2017.

Who knows could just have been a coincidence.
