I think you are ignorant of the current abilities of diesels. I own an M6, a Z4M and the 335d is the next car on my list as a daily driver. It's a phenomenal automobile and gets respectable gas mileage as well. I drove a 335d last month and was stunned. It's an incredible car.

As for diesels with manual transmissions are concerned, again you are behind the times. Diesel powered cars are tearing up the LMS series of races and several competitive diesel 1 series regularly can be found racing in the VLN series at the Nuerburgring--ever hear of the place?

coming from a torque-centric mentality (pickup truck), the notion of a torquey 6-banger is very appealing. i hope there's wide introduction of this engine throughout the BMW lineup here in the US. it would also be nice to have another diesel option, especially in the 1 & 3 series lineups (like a 120d or 123d) to compete with some of the newer diesel cars coming to the market.

well, yeah. on the 335, it's pulling about 3500lbs around, whereas the X6 weighs about 1.5 times as much!

BMW has announced that its 3.0L I-6 diesel engine has received an upgrade. The newer inline diesel engine will boast 306hp / 442 lb-ft torque (up from 286hp / 428 lb-ft). In addition, fuel consumption and CO2 emission levels will be reduced by 4%

The fuel injection system will be upgraded to BMW's latest gen common rail system, capable of injector pressure levels of 2,000 BAR (29,000 psi) (up from 1,600 BAR). This will allow more precision in the fuel flow metering.

No word yet on if the US will be receiving this engine in the near term.

For those interrested in the announced BMW innovations, I sent an e-mail to BMW asking for details about the new diesel engine and the 8-speed transmission. They told me that both the new 3.0L diesel engine and the 8-speed transmission will be first introduced for the BWM 5 series GT in October. The engine will gradually replace all current inline 6 turbo engines. When I asked about the availability of these options for the 330xd in the next 6-12 months, I was told that wouldn't happen
